Georgetown Faces Need for Extra Classrooms and a Teacher in 1953
Georgetown which houses 186 students this year expects enrollment to climb to at least 200 by September prompting a need for an additional teacher and a new classroom. Principal J L Lambert told the North Halton high school board that the school is at capacity with a teacher to student ratio of 1 to 26.7, far above the regional average of 1 to 18. He warned of distribution concerns with two large Grade 10s and a large Grade 11 upcoming, and cited unresolved funding and cost-sharing disputes with Esquesing as obstacles to building. The board discussed potential debentures and urged talks with Georgetown council. Additional items included new sewing machines for Milton home economics, selections for vocational and academic options, and the Georgetown-Acton-Erin track meet slated for October 14 in Georgetown.

Imperial Army Vet William Maybank Dies
William J Maybanks a World War I veteran and Georgetown resident for 25 years died in St Josephs Hospital Guelph after a long illness. He served in the Imperial Army and was a German prisoner. He came to Canada in 1920 and lived in Huttonville Brampton before Georgetown. He worked at Smith Stone Ltd and belonged to Canadian Legion Branch 120. He is survived by his wife Lily McCann a son Arthur and siblings in Reading England. Funeral at McClure Funeral Home with Greenwood Cemetery interment and Legion graveside service led by Leslie Clark.

William E Newman 74 longtime St Catharines businessman and founder of Newman Brothers contracting died after a stroke. He built major Niagara Peninsula structures and organized the first St Catharines horse show where he exhibited across the U S and Canada. He is survived by his wife and daughter Mrs Clare Helmer.

Paper Man Arthur Herbert Retires After 47 Years at Provincial Mill
Arthur Herbert, second only to William Merritt in Provincial Paper mill tenure, retires after 47 years. He started as a coaster, later served as Georgetown Public School caretaker, and worked previously at the lower mill under James McNicol and Ed McWhirter. Herbert lived in Georgetown, once in Wiarton, served in 1st Canadian Contingent and Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, married Marie Coy in Scotland, led town service as councillor, and belonged to Lorne Scots Band and Provincial Quarter Century Club.
