Charles Burns of Georgetown celebrated his eightieth birthday by walking the full 30 mile Oxfam route in nine hours on a May Saturday. He clocked even split times at each checkpoint and expressed sympathy for younger walkers, noting their sore feet.
A council meeting devolved into a dispute over police staffing and mayoral attendance. The mayor refused to resign amid calls, defending his 17½ year tenure and attendance record. Dr. Franceis and Dr. Young challenged staffing claims while discussing one officer per 750 residents versus seventeen officers total, with budget concerns following.

The united church official board won a council vote to amend the parking by law. Exemption granted for streets where churches are located citing youth facilities and worship convenience. Ernest Forgrave urged Guelph Street from John to Main, mayor called the move uncalled for but supported traffic safety. The council approved parking exemptions near all churches unanimously.
Two residents Gordon Monk and Bob Mills warned the council about an open ditch behind their Pennington Bain Court homes in Greystone. An easement storm sewer is under construction but the current open cut ends in two large cement culvert openings. Dr Young said iron grills would be added to the culverts, health hazards pending proof. The issue echoes a Maple Avenue Main Street drive area near the Presbyterian Church where parking was restricted, with involvement from the County Health Unit and County Safety Office.
The Separate School Board told council it will keep the same mill rate as last year with 26 residential and 28 commercial. Public school rates are 22.47 residential and 24.07 for industrial and commercial. Six bids for deep well No 4 were reviewed in committee. Only bid for weed jetting came from Guy Rodgers. A third reading approved the by law for a $90,000 water well and main project. A third reading also passed the odd/even watering bylaw restricting watering to odd days for odd-numbered houses and even days for even-numbered houses 6 to 9 pm. Andrew Murray Motors won a four ton truck bid at $4,082.50. Maple Avenue reconstruction residents will be contacted. drawings will be at the engineer’s office for review.
Halton riding Liberals chose Oakville lawyer Bud Whiting on the fourth ballot at Hornby Towers Golf Club Oakville after a dramatic night with a third ballot tie and a large crowd. Whiting emerged as Liberal candidate for Halton in the upcoming federal election.
Georgetown Lions Club named Stan Wade as president for the coming year. The slate includes Andy St Laurent as 2nd vice president Don Gosling as 3rd vice president EraAle Sykes as secretary and Ray Harlow as assistant secretary Lyn McLaren noted in past role change.
