United Auto Workers Local 876 Bliss division with 28 employees voted on April 27 to ratify a new agreement after a 11 day dispute. Workers walked out April 12 and picketed around the clock until a government conciliator helped finalize the settlement.
Three Georgetown District High School students portrayed the United Kingdom at the Oakville Trafalgar High School model UN. They led a 35-delegate event amid debates on China’s UN seat. Roger Smith, Rich ard Enright, and Tony McAvey accepted the award after three days of diplomacy and quarrels with opposing delegates.
Lynne Hyde will become a set director for the Canadian Opera Co starting May 16. He signed a contract for the upcoming season after working with Georgetown Little Theatre where his designs earned visual awards for Under the Sycamore Tree and The Little Hut. Hyde, son of Councillor E Hyde, has also exhibited costume sketches for Twelfth Night at House BOl and has seven years as a technician with W H Carr.
The Student Teachers monthly forum met at the home of honorary president Mrs. B Scull in Georgetown on April 16. Mrs. B Champion, president, presided as members attended. Georgetown becomes a Trinity College school center with practical exams held late April. Plans were made to receive examiner Mr. Harold Jones. meeting adjourned with tea served.

Dr. Corbett of Orangeville was named Halton County engineer at last week’s meeting to replace Roy F. Smith who retires after 48 years with the county. Corbett previously led Dufferin County engineering and earlier served as Middlesex assistant engineer. Retiring same time is J.F. Rogers, county assessor, with R. Beach newly hired as assessor. A motion to refer engineer applicants to a Personnel Psychiatrist failed.
Four delegates from Gepriey and District join Ontario Division at the 46th annual Red Cross meeting in Sault Ste. Marie on April 28 and 29. Water Safety Workshop cites life jacket neglect and urges Department of Transport to ban inferior jackets. Public relations officer Connie Nieuhof calls for swimming taught in schools and indoor pool to aid drowning prevention. In Ontario 323 people drowned in 1965. A child dress display by Sault Ste Marie Red Cross Women’s Workshop steals the show.
Halton Junior Farmers held their annual church service at Grace United Church Milton on Sunday May 1. Harold Thompson served as president Ruth Mason as vice president and Joy Howard as county director assisted with the service.
Georgetown Public School will open a new seven room senior school in September named 2 Senior Public School. William French, principal of Park Public School, explains a dual program combining home room core subjects in the morning with rotating class periods in the afternoon for art history science and more. The change ends split grades at Kennedy and Harrison and shifts grades K to 6 to their respective campuses while senior grades move to the new school. Trustees and principals attended the Monday night meeting at the Howard Wrigglesworth auditorium.
Magistrate Kenneth M. Lang of Georgetown called the Base Line and 7th Line Hornby intersection one of the area’s most dangerous. He dismissed a failing to yield charge against an elderly Hornby resident and urged safety measures including a lower speed limit from 50 mph. Crown lawyer Peter K. McWilliams cited a fatality last year and an inquest verdict advocating removing a west knoll to improve visibility, which is only about 180 feet at 60 mph. Mary Southcott testified the accused’s car pulled out forcing her to swerve and hit a tree. Constable Tom Dube noted skid marks on the road.
The John Inglis Company, which had optioned 35 acres from the town in February, will not locate in Georgetown. Ontario solicitors say the option expired March 23 and no extension was arranged with Brumac Developments. If true, the land reverts to sale to other interests. town keeps a $5,000 option payment.
Halton County offers centennial trees to rural residents at 50 cents per tree with a 25 tree limit per family. Red or sugar maple cost 3.00 and white ash 1.50, with the county matching a 2000 grant from the government. First come, first served. unfilled orders refunded and farmers may reapply.
