The council criticized overspending on highway work with $64 000 approved to widen and resurface last year raising final costs to $124 000 and a debenture beyond prior approval. Mayor Armstrong cited estimation changes and plan additions as reasons. Council may write to the department and seek board approval for the extra debenture.
The Raiders beat Tillsonburg 4 2 to capture the Robertson Trophy securing provincial hockey honours for the third time in nine years. Earlier series games featured a 7 1 drubbing for Tillsonburg and a dramatic comeback as Georgetown trailed 2 1 before a late Raiders burst. Celebration included a victory parade, bonfires, and a municipal escort to Glen Williams.
Robert Stewardson joined Smith & Stone Ltd as Chief Inspector eight years after moving to town. He will work with the armaments division of the Department of National Defence in Ottawa starting May 1. His wife and son Michael will join him after the school term ends.
Peter Norton and Glen Williams were guests of the Boys Choir at the Church of the Redeemer in Toronto under C H Densem on Sunday April 21. They were accompanists by Mr and Mrs H F Beaumont. Jean and Margery Mackenzie vacationed in Florida with family.
Mr and Mrs Murray Andrew Bender will reside in Listowel after returning from a southern States honeymoon. The April 20 Knox Presbyterian ceremony featured Rev Alex Calder. bride Helen Marguerite Brown, daughter of Howard and Mrs Hube, and groom Murray Bender, son of Clarence and Mrs Bender. Attendants included Mrs Thomas Pridham, Marjorie Stonehouse, Joyce Brown. Jack Boyce and ushers Jack Bender and George Brown. Reception showcased a three-tier cake and yellow daffodils with formal wear in pinks and creams.
Reeve Stan Allen and council confirmed a $1500 project to grade ditches and install culverts in the Swanek subdivision to ease chronic drainage issues. Critics warned storm sewers may still fail in heavy rains, and officials noted higher costs prevent a $15000 system this season. An amendment to taxi bylaw requires June 1 insurance and proof of compliance. Main Street S. widening awaits financing assurances.
Mrs. W. R. Cook of 29 Henry St. flew to England after being notified of the sudden death of her father Oliver Mathews in Cornwall. He was sixty five, retired from an engineering plant two weeks ago and planned to farm the small Cornwall property. He is survived by his wife and two daughters Mrs. Cock of Georgetown and Mrs. Jack Bullen of Philadelphia. Mrs. Bullen arrived in Georgetown Tuesday to stay with Mrs. Cock's family while in England.
Guests attended the wedding and reception from Listowel Kitchen er Mitchell London Fergus Bam pton Rockwood Gait Hanover and Campbellville. The bride wore a navy silk crepe sheath dress with a matching jacket and a white corsage.
Two local men advertise a joint venture offering window cleaning and storm window removal, full house cleaning, grass cutting, and lawn and garden maintenance as part of their services.
Love of a faithful old dog caused grief to his master yesterday morning. Bob Simson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Simson of Ontario Street, was on night duty at Flash Service Station near Dixie Plaza when he took his dog for company. The dog darted onto the highway and was hit. Bob rushed to aid, failed to see the oncoming car, and was struck. He is at St. Joseph's Hospital in Toronto with a compound fracture of the left leg and a broken ankle. The dog's death was tragic.
The Lions Club fundraising draw proceeds 444 go to the pool fund with Henry Helfant and District Scout Commissioner David Dills noted.
