Interest and excitement mount as the Georgetown International Hockey Tournament advances toward Saturday’s climax. Half the hopefuls were eliminated, leaving survivors driven by the sparkle of trophies and the chance at glory in key matchups.
The Georgetown Kinsmen Club hosts a large four district bantam hockey tournament drawing 800 kids, 44 teams, and 80 games. Teams from Acton Erin Sarnia Ayr Aylmer Exeter Milton Miltonon and Detroit vie for the Grand Championship now slated for Saturday evening with a Toronto Young Nationals vs Detroit exhibition. Organizers and volunteers from Rebekahs Rotary Knox Ladies Legion Auxiliary and other groups prepared thousands of meals across three days as the event shifts to March due to a winter holiday.
Georgetown hospital administrator Fred Wiitaker announced that an architect has been engaged to plan a 31 bed expansion. Two thirds of the cost will come from government grants, with local funds raised by the town. The Ontario Hospital Commission approved the expansion. Deputy Reeve Speight expects part of the town’s share from the treasury. Finance chairman Emmerson said the board wants the money in the capital forecast and the administrator to meet with council. The plan now aims to meet town by laws, with permission requested to alter buildings. Flooding disrupted a council meeting as water surrounded St. Albans Church, affecting well water and triggering emergency responses.
Swollen streams and fast spring runoff endanger youngsters this week as high water increases risks from rivers. Authorities warn families to supervise children and avoid flooded areas during this period.
In east Georgetown the mayor threatens road closures to curb parking near show homes in the Alean subdivision. Brumac Developments denies road responsibility while agreeing to study the issue and report to council next Monday.
John T Armstrong of Georgetown was named one of five men on Halton County Court of Revision at a Tuesday County Council session. Other members named were J Blair Burlington A Coulson Burlington D McAullan Nassagaweya and R Featherston Oakville. A proposal to reduce per session pay from twenty to fifteen dollars failed 27 to 6. Also noted Simon Baverstock celebrated his 102nd birthday at Halton Manor.
The Milton Raiders clinched their first league championship after a dramatic season. They finished league play with 34 wins, 4 ties, and 6 losses while drawing about 1,600 fans for the Friday showdown. The club overcame challenges from Ajax and the Milton Merchants to seal the crown in a hard fought title chase.
