Fundraising efforts push toward a $4600 town target with $3300 already raised. LeRoy Dale, chairman, notes strong support as county council doubles its donation to five societies. List of large donors includes W. Y. Bradley and Howard Kentner among others and ward totals are reported from across the area.
Active service notes reveal Ernie Alcott of Brantford on furlough, Elimbeth Coffin visiting Rockcliffe, and Gov John Hoare of Halifax on leave. Reginald Blair marks his 5th overseas birthday in Italy with the Princess Pat, meeting many from home as Pilot James Emmerson serves in Lachine after Halifax posting. Weather hampered communications.
Pilot Officer Robert B. Charters of Brampton is reported missing after a recent air operation. A decorated DFM recipient, he previously survived a blistering Essen bombing raid and a lightning strike incident in England, with multiple injuries yet returned to duty. Charters enlisted on his 18th birthday, trained in Toronto and London, and went overseas in May 1942. Oakville considers police chief, John P. Derry of Guelph takes over duties.
Esquesing Township Council met at Stewarttown with Reeve C H May presiding. Attending were Deputy Reeve Murray and Councillors Cleave Currie Wilson. The meeting adopted minutes, addressed road obstruction on Town Line, Local Option tax talks, school area grants, and budget items. By law to fix Clerk salary was read and passed, council adjourned to April 3.
A box weighing 345 pounds was sent from Mrs Penson's Launch Rooms in London to Mrs Massey, England, with children's dresses, knits, and prints. Funds covered ocean freight, sent by Mrs Penson to the Red Cross Society in Saint John, and separate donations support ongoing relief for soldiers and families in need.
Private Malcolm Brandford elder son of Mr and Mrs George Brandford wed Evelyn Reta Apperley daughter of Mr and Mrs George Apperley at Hope United Church Toronto. The ceremony was conducted by Reverend Curtis Saturday evening. A reception followed at the bride’s home and the couple will spend two weeks with the Brandford family.
President Craig Reid hosted a combined business and social evening for directors and wives. J. E Whitelock urged a Husking Corn Field Crop Competition with government and Halton Crop Improvement support. The society hopes school boards will fund prize money and a Norval Hall dance will aid war work.
The Herald British War Victims Fund records show a Toronto Evening Tel entry with amounts 9142.25 and 261.01 and a total of 3303.26 dated March 16th. Cashion mandi acknowledged the entries.
The Georgetown Herald notes the Soldiers' Comforts Fund committee forwarded funds and reports cash on hand and balances. The Georgetown Women's Institute contributed and the March 15, 1844 total reaches $911.42 across items including cash on hand of $673.54 and acknowledgment of $227.88.
Flight Sergeant James Louth aged 22 of the Iroquois Squadron RCAFP is presumed dead after a Berlin raid. Son of Mrs. and Mr. Walter Louth of Georgetown, husband, he served as a Halifax bomber navigator. Red Cross notification conveyed the loss.
The George town Women's Institute met March 1 at 3 p.m. with Mrs W Cy M Dowell presiding. Reports included a marathon euchre fundraiser netting 30 dollars for Red Cross Navy League and Soldiers' Comfort Fund. A programme on Citizenship and entertainments followed with a Humorous reading and a vocal duet.
In Georgetown Arena last Saturday Georgetown United Church Boys' Club edged Norval Boys' Club 6 4. Burns starred with tying goal late in regulation and two goals in nine minutes of overtime while Dillon held the Norval attack. Scorers: Norval Cunningham Singer Cleave Robinson 1 each. Rev and Mrs J L Self hosted a Norval Georgetown Combine Intermediate Hockey season end party in Norval. Guests, including Miss Patsy Robinson and Miss Teobel Murray, enjoyed games and a salad supper, followed by a brief meeting to approve team windbreakers and crests.
A fire destroying the farm house near Limehouse owned by Glenn Kinnear RCAP, completely consumed the building and furniture. The blaze, seen by Georgetown Fire Chief Donald Latimer around midnight last Saturday, caused no wind-driven spread and left neighboring structures safe. Neighbors say the house had not been occupied for six months. origin undetermined. Provincial Officer Lemon of Milton notified the owner’s Toronto-based parents.
Plans for distributing Ration Book No 4 cover 12 000 000 Canadians with local boards coordinating centers in cities towns villages and townships. Distribution will occur during the week of March 26 to April 1 with dates varying by municipality and local newspaper notices announcing centre locations.
Chester D. Cole died March 8 in St Josephs Hospital Toronto after six months illness. He was husband of Nellie Sutherland and son of the late Jacob Cole, formerly of Georgetown. Survived by widow and four sons in the armed forces and Canada. burial at St George's Georgetown then Greenwood Cemetery Toronto.
Pte. Robert J. Wiley aged 20, son of Mr and Mrs William Wiley of Georgetown, died on active service in the Sicilian campaign as Ottawa confirms his death received March 7. He had been missing since July 1943 and later presumed to have taken part in the Sicily theatre. Born in Ireland, he came to Canada as a youth and joined the Lorne Scots Regiment in Morphee Overseas.
