Acton Band Tops Waterloo Festival Evidence

Success crowned another Waterloo Musical Festival held Saturday the seventh annual event. Georgetown youths W Long and J Wilcox won placements in individual contests while Acton Band claimed top honors. Georgetown band did not compete due to losing their bandmaster.

Local Orange Lodges Parade at Grace Anglican Milton

Halton County Orange Lodges from Georgetown Glen Williams Hornby Stewarttown Acton Bronte Carlisle Oakville and Milton joined a Sunday evening service at Grace Anglican Church Milton with Canon L J R Naftel preaching. County Master George Peacock and John Mills 77 led marches with Stewarttown Fife and Drum Band. Mills the oldest marcher with 57 consecutive marches aiming for July 12.

Hiram McClelland Buried in Alton Cemetery

Funeral services were held in Alton for Hiram McClelland 76 son of pioneer residents of the village. Rev P Davidge conducted the ceremony with pallbearers Joseph Dodds Thomas Meek Lloyd Limebeer George Mc Clelland Joyce McConnell and W G Coulter. Interment followed in Alton cemetery. He spent boyhood in Alton and died in Toronto on Thursday.

43rd Annual W C T U Convention Held at Oakville

The Halton County Women’s Christian Temperance Union met at St John’s United Church Oakville on June 21 under Mrs R B Galbraith. Officers were reelected and Mrs J H Peacock of Toronto spoke on temperance education and causes of youth discontent with intoxicants.

Georgetown June 27 1939 letter to the editor reports a Brew ers Association effort to open a brewery warehouse faced opposition. Citizens gathered over 1100 signatures last year and sought an appointment with Liquor Commissioner Gordon to protest. The petition remains undelivered as rumors of a new warehouse linger.

Manion to Run in Home Riding

Hon. Dr. R. J. Manion national Conservative leader signals his bid to contest Fort William in the next general election. In a broadcast address he said his name would go before the party convention in Fort William and he would run in his home constituency if honored. Manion represented Fort William 1917 to 1935 and was defeated by Liberal Rev. Dan McIvor in the last federal election. The convention date is not yet set and J. C. Perry announced the candidacy.

Acton neighbors sweep week two-ball mixed foursomes win

Jack Eeighton and Miss Marjorie Gault won the week two-ball mixed foursomes at Cedar Crest, with Dr. Bateman and Mrs. Kennedy also taking a prize. St George’s Church ladies hosted a luncheon supervised by Mrs. Millar. Mrs. Kennedy of Acton captured the bridge prize and a six-table bridge session wrapped the evening.

Norval Presbyterian Church Marks Anniversary and History

Norval Presbyterian Church in Haltom Peel marked its diamond jubilee with services recalling its century of linked ministry with Union Church. The article notes historic opening in 1879, 1903 renovations with a pipe organ, and prior itinerant pastors before Rev. Patrick Gray’s induction. A garden party on the church lawn featured Rose Creighton and the Canadian Mountaineers.

Lions Club Moonlight Cruise Aboard Cayuga On Lake Ontario

The Georgetown Lions Club and guests sail from Toronto at 6 PM on the Cayuga for a moonlit Lake Ontario trip to Niagara on the Lake and Queenston. A lunch follows and a club meeting is held where Past President W. Grant and G. W. McLintock are honored and a gift watch is presented for faithful service.
