Chief Constable Roy Traley said a six week rash of bike thefts involves stealing cycles and stripping them of accessories and wheels before dumping them in remote areas. Police note many bikes are left overnight in unsecure spots.
Over 100 golfers teed off Tuesday at Trafalgar Golf Country for Ontario Open qualifying. Georgetown entrants Max Foster Terry May Hob Harris all failed to clear the cutoff. Harv Chap was disqualified for pushing his tee time. Doug Hruton was the local hopeful who did not need to qualify. The Open runs three days through Saturday with medal play.
A Georgetown man without a valid driver's license since 39063 was fined 100 dollars for driving while his permit remained suspended. The suspension arose from an $1800 claim. he had repaid $1000. His car was impounded for three months after spot checks found no permit.
William Wesley Tonson a Georgetown nurseryman and four year local businessman died suddenly June 14 at his R R 3 farm. He ran Wynfield Nursery and Garden Centre first beside the I G A store then on his farm. A Toronto native who moved with family to Clarkson, he had worked for Robert Bimpeon and operated fruit farms in Clarkson. Survived by wife Nose Arnauts two children Joyce Binder and Roy six grandchildren and three brothers Donald Toronto Stanley Pittsfield Winds and Hartley Islington. Funeral at Christ Church Clarkson conducted by Rev. Robert Oliver. Burial in Spring Creek Cemetery Clarkson.
The paper announces its weekly issue will be advanced due to the July 1 holiday. Production shifts to Wednesday morning with deadlines for advertising and news items set for Monday 5 p.m. in MTs.
First Baptist Church and Mission Circle honor Margaret Smith with gifts and an oil painting in a church hall farewell after evening service. Reeve G. Leslie and Coun. Currie object to a 2.6 mill levy for a Terra Cotta access road portion costing 242 2H thousand with 80 percent funded by the Highway portion. They urged consulting the Minister of Highways as the project affects Fi lquesing residents who see road use only seasonally. The council planned to seek a ministerial appointment and postponed a County Assentment Commissioner decision pending further study.
Western University graduate Margaret E. Miller of Norval plans to become an Air Canada stewardess. Daughter of Gordon and (Mrs) Miller she earned a B A at convocation and is a Streetsville high school alumna currently taking an Air Canada hostess training course.
Mrs Harrison Wood of Bairstow Crescent and 28 Balratow Crescent criticizes Georgetown taxes in a council letter. She funds May and June taxes but deducts 15.5 percent of the tax share assessed to roads.
Four Georgetown campers reported raccoons wearing masks entered their Terra Cotta Conservation Area tent overnight. The animals scattered provisions, opened marshmallow bags and cookies, toppled a cooler, and caused litter while the group slept. Dennis Wright found the mess at 11:30 PM and the raccoons lingered nearby making noises until after 3 AM.
Rev. John H. McMulkin of St George's Anglican Church will be presented to the Queen Mother during her Toronto visit this week. Major McMulkin, padding the Lorne Scots Regiment and ex-officer of the Toronto Scottish, will attend a reception and dinner with the Empire Club and Royal Canadian Military Institute. Colonel John R Barber also plans to attend the dinner and colour ceremony.
A GE slicing knife will go to Mrs Betty Piper Stewarttown once received from the manufacturer by Launder Base automatic laundry operators. The knife was first prize in a two draw during the introduction of new machines at Young and Market Streets quarters. The winning ticket was pulled by Herald manager Walter Blehn on Tuesday afternoon.
Residents confront Glen Willisins council over water flowing onto Karen Street backyards. Spokesman Jack Cornish and neighbors demand ditch and pipe solutions while Reeve Leslie warns of action. Currie proposes partial piping to ease the issue.
The membership of Local 14161 District SO United Mine Workers of America elected Rex Cook as president for a two year term in the 100th year, Thursday. Other officers include Mrs Huth McCrea vice president Mrs Jim Doherty recording secretary Mrs Isobel Engleby financial secretary with trustees Fred Wacker Hall Cother and Mrs Lillian Ritchie. Beatrice Roy and Gladys Reid join the negotiating committee, Sgt. at Arms John Doherty. One position on the negotiating committee and Chief Steward remain vacant for next meeting. Local 14161 lists 508 members.
Brampton resident Howard Caton has purchased the 3 1/4 acre Aronesty property behind Charles Street at Church Street head. Gar Lacey of Halton and Peet Trust Co announced the sale. The late Professor Ht J Hutt bought the site in 1940 from W F Smith and developed it into a garden with flowering crab apples gladiolus and iris. his son Gordon joined in 1942 and ran a mink ranch there until last year.
Robert A. Wilson of Toronto appointed to head the newly created police patrol at Georgetown. Council votes to restore force to nine men and to hire two more constables as a first step toward implementing a police reform report. Wilson brings fourteen years of experience and will lead a restructured department amid past declines.
Delrex Market Centre and two other downtown shops announce Thursday night hours for a second week. Merchants lobby against widening bylaw. mayor says no action yet. Some shoppers want longer hours but council not ready to repeal or amend the rules.
Georgetown magistrate Langdon spoke on reducing teen drinking as two Georgetown girls aged 16 and 18 faced charges for receiving beer from a man who bought it for them. The court heard they admitted ownership of four beers March 23 and sought to obtain alcohol at a restaurant. Crown Attorney McWilliams noted the girls pursued beer.
A 1938 Olds driven by Carl Frederick Bushe lost control on the shoulder and slid into a ditch at the corner of Guelph and Sinclair. The driver was not injured. Investigation by P. C. George Martin occurred shortly before 1 p.m.
