Dr Ezra Hyde told Monday's council that a new by law prohibiting loitering in public places would give police authority to eliminate situations they cannot legally cope with. The by law would impose fines from 10 to 300 dollars and apply to plazas and the downtown business district.
An angry ratepayer voices complaints in the council chamber as Creil Davidson requests a smell test while the mayor confirms a return to twice weekly garbage collection for July. The summer schedule adds $290 to $340 weekly, funded by extra staff, with pickups on Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday.
Merchant Sol Sherman, a local business man for eight years, died after falling ill at a wedding. He started with his uncle Sol Sherman, later ran his own shop, and four years ago bought a former restaurant building from Date Estate, adding a second floor for display. He lived at 21 Almore Avenue with wife Elka and children Sam and Sharon, plus brother Abraham. Funeral was held Tuesday at Park Memorial Chapel and burial in Bathurst Lawn Cemetery.
Residents object to a double 75 cent museum entry fee at Halton Kelso Conservation Area. William Coulter, reeve of Nas sagawega Township, urged a $500 grant from the Halton Region Conservation Authority to cover the 25 cent reduction and stop the extra charge. The Authority will consider the request.
Mrs Jessie Lawr aged 68 was struck and killed by a car on county road No 11 in Belfountain while on an evening stroll. The driver Susan Parker with two passengers, Aurora Aquino and Consulation Taduram, reported minor injuries. all were treated at local hospitals. Lawr leaves sons Billy Oakville and Douglas in London Ontario.
Georgetown Planning Board approved a proposed Maple Ave Highway corner apartment project. Odorico Construction would build it. The council received the board’s letter without comment.
Mayor Gibbons announced a Glen Williams overhead bridge plan is back after council quashed earlier. He said the bridge is 80 percent Highway Department and 20 percent county with no township cost, while estimates put the job at 108000 dollars plus concerns about traffic and overall cost. Reeve Hunter noted it is more complex and traffic is heavier than at Glen Williams, risking higher expenses. Dr Hyde praised efforts but emphasized remaining doubts about funding, scope, and responsibility.
Only 21 schoolchildren attended the Red Cross Water Safety film show in the Legion auditorium on Saturday. Legion members Art Stamp and Bert Hale volunteered to present the films. The Jiminy Cricket cartoon I'm No Fool in Water delighted the children as Georgetown Community Pool Supervisor Robert Godley and his staff demonstrated reaching assists and various artificial respiration methods.
Halton Crown Attorney Peter X McWilliams told a Burlington coroner s jury that safety belts should be installed in all cars. He cited 28 motor vehicle deaths in Halton last year, 20 of which involved occupants being thrown from cars, and noted 40 highway deaths in 1965 compared with 28 in 1934. He warned the issue is very serious.
The council OKs a $3000 water booster pump to serve out of town users in Silvercreek despite opposition from Deputy Reeve Jim Young and Mayor Gibbons. Water chairman Arthur Speight noted possible nonuse if pressure is adequate with the new tower, while others urged caution about easement rights and town residents paying for lines. The measure passed with Gibbons and Young opposed.
The Imperial Hell drivers thrilled 2500 spectators at Georgetown Park with a two hour exhibition. No injuries were reported after two mishaps including a Valiant rolling on its roof and a near miss, as emergency services stood by. The Kin group expects about $500 profit from the event.
Governor General Georges P. Vanier saluted the Lorne Scots at Brampton Fair Grounds during the Trooping of the Colour ceremony held for the 4th Brampton Flower Festival. He praised the regiment’s efficiency and its service in two world wars while noting militiaman sacrifice. dignitaries present included Hon. Lieut. Col. Conn Smythe and Honorary Col. John R. Barber. A party of 25 Lancashire officers joined later, with regimental officers greeted by the Vaniers at a reception. The unit traces its lineage to the Peel Battalion of Infantry since 1866.
Census Commissioner George Mundy said the census taking will be finished this week. Enumerators report few problems with many callbacks, and all twenty local workers, mostly housewives, have carried out a smooth operation despite one door opening after two aggressive sales pitches. The final tabulation will follow.
Eleven instructors will teach at the Georgetown Swimming Pool this season under Chief Instructor Robert Godley. Names include John Golden Chris Sargent Rick Holmes John Layman Barbara Panken Rev Johnson Ian Gosling Pat Lince Diane Foster and Ray Fox. The pool opened on Saturday June 18 with over two hundred children entering the gates.
Georgetown Girls Pipe Band marched in the Brampton Flower Festival Parade marking their fourth public appearance of the year. Since May 28 they have toured Hamilton Boy Scouts parade, Lions Club Convention in London, Cedarvale Park opening, the Flower Festival, Port Credit Lions carnival, Burlington Jaycees parade, and an Orange parade in Shelburne on July 9. The band consists of eight pipers and eight drummers.
Georgetown entrants at the Brampton Flower Festival parade saw Globe Productions Pantomime float stall near Main and Queen. Spectators pushed the overheated car and float for a block, then a ten minute repair enabled the float to rejoin the procession featuring characters from Dick Whittington Aladdin and Babes in the Woods with Ralph Ursel on accordion.
A five year old boy, Robert Calder of 95 Sargent Road, suffered a bruised right hip after colliding with a motorcycle while bicycling Saturday afternoon. He was treated at Georgetown Hospital and released, the son of Mr and Mrs George Calder.
