A Georgetown weekly reports threats aimed at Mrs Best amid political tension. Five callers delivered messages urging her to concede the election to Harley, reflecting aggressive local campaigning. The Herald touts its high circulation and broad advertising reach in the city.
Mrs Olive Gerry of Toronto attended a luncheon for Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother hosted by Ontario's Lieutenant Governor and Mrs Kedler Mackay. The Queen Mother offered sympathy to Mrs Gerry, who mourns her husband and a brother from World War I.
Georgetown voters surpassed the national average with 81.3 percent turnout from 4406 ballots cast of 5419 eligible. In 1958 turnout was 81.1 percent with 3307 votes of 4074. Conservatives fell by nearly 400 votes while Liberals and NDP gained. a fourth Social Credit candidate had 33 votes.
Indications that Yown municipal elections will include an advance poll emerged in council Tuesday. Reeve Elliott and Dr Varrager proposed a bylaw to authorize it, arguing voting access when business keeps residents away on election day. The discussion touched on polling locations and policing near schools, with concerns about building access and limits, and officials urged due diligence before opening any advance ballots.
In a tight county contest Laberal candidate Jhalton Racting holds a slim 61 vote edge over Nandy Best. With around sixty ballots yet to be counted, the outcome hinges on late tallies and local party support as the race moves toward a potential House of Commons seat.
At a Kinsmen Club meeting three trustees were appointed to oversee a fund for the children of Mr and Mrs Reg Higham who perished in a car crash near Quebec City last week. George Maker Syd Alcorn and the sitting president will serve as trustees. An account is opened at the Royal Bank and further contributions are welcomed to cover immediate and near term needs of the children.
The Georgetown Lions celebrate a milestone year as the rodeo expands into a double feature and draws crowds from across the province. Spectators hail the event as the best show in five years with out of town praise naming it “Little Calgary” though it grows past that label. Actors and horses compete in new feats including a calf race and a mule act, drawing enthusiastic fans and local sponsors.
Halton residents await final service ballot totals as 61 vote margin keeps Best ahead of Harley in a tight Halton race. Returning officer Duck West expects official figures by Monday afternoon with ballot boxes opened next day to add service votes.
Deputy Reeve Hunter warned council that water shutoffs may begin for delinquent customers. He noted seven to eight thousand dwellings owe back accounts and said a water committee meeting would review potential arrests if debts remain unpaid.
Avian expands its offices moving from the first to the third floor of the Carrate Building at Campbell Gate and Mountainview Rd to gain space. The firm also increases its technical staff and recently advertised for engineers and draftsmen in the Herald classifieds.
