A one acre site on Delrex Boulevard in the Lane subdivision has been purchased by the local Lutheran Church for a permanent church. They have met at Wrigglesworth School for ten months for services and Sunday School. No definite construction start date due to incomplete local organization. Church service is at 10 30 Sunday morning and Sunday School at 9 30 am.
Gerald Wickman 21 and Donald Wickman 16, brothers of Mrs Fendley, drowned when their canoe overturned at Haynes Lake in Parry Sound District while accompanying Roger Wickman to launch a new craft. Roger reached shore, found no keys, and call for help. searchers found the bodies next morning. Gerald was a Parry Sound garage mechanic and Donald a first year high school student. They were sons of Otto and Mrs Wickman of Parry Sound with multiple siblings in Ontario communities.
A Knox Presbyterian Church auxiliary picnic supper at the Lane home on Terry Court closed spring activities. After supper a group visited the Malton airport and another went to Cookaville to see a show. Meetings resume in fall after a summer recess.
Rex Cook of Local 14161 District 50 UMWA and the local leadership won unanimous confidence from a large Smith and Stood plant assembly in a Royal Canadian Legion hall meeting. The vote followed talks on a union switch and better conditions amid UAW membership card confusion and a planned continued fight for workers.
A Campbellville man narrowly avoided a gorge plunge on Main Street when he veered off the road after missing a curve. Donald Keith Moffatt, RR 1 Campbellville, hit a hydro pole near Ontario Street but stopped short of the drop, leaving $500 damage. Police, led by Cpl. R D. Whitson, investigated the midnight incident.
Mrs Kathleen McMillan of 409 King Street East won 56 dollars in the Lions Club 200 draw this month. Her ticket was drawn at a Lions meeting Tuesday night as the fifth of a series of 12 draws.
The Georgetown Leader printed its final issue last week ending a one year old business that shut its office unannounced on Thursday. Inquiries are directed to 232 Guelph St in the Detrex Developments office building. Claude Kewley is named as managing editor and public relations representative. The paper originated in the Detrex building and moved to Detrex Market Centre. typesetting and printing were done by Nills Printing & Publishing Acton.
Council engages Hrampton realtor RE. Mitch ell for land appraisal needed for highway widening from east limits to Mountainview Road. A $1,000 charge is set. Road chairman William F. Hunter says appraisals won’t affect schedule and a report on tender timing will be given at next Monday’s meeting.
Colin J. Hayward a 22 year old son of Mr and Mrs Stanley A Hayward Georgetown joins the staff of the RCAF Public Relations Office as an officer cadet and UWO student. He will handle public relations duties in WC through the summer. Hayward born in Kilmarnock Scotland educated in London Ontario Georgetown High School and UWO joined the RCAF in 1961 and served at Air Defence Command HQ St Hubert and Air Force HQ Ottawa. He is married to GiUanne Jeanne Kentner daughter of Frank Kentner Georgetown.
Fourteen year old Jim McDowell fell during a noon hour game near a telephone pole causing a concussion and a convulsion. Iris Neil used a comb to keep his mouth open and prevent tongue injury until paramedics arrived. He was treated at Georgetown Hospital until Saturday with no skull fracture but careful observation for complications.
Students across grades finish exams this week with vacation looming until September. Grade 9 and grade 11 courses completed last tests yesterday covering defence, central, commercial, technical, and vocational subjects. Grade 10 ends term today with final exams scheduled Friday morning and afternoon.
Langdon urges Cedarvale School for Girls in Georgetown to be bought for a half-way house for released prisoners. The Justice Administration Committee found the site excellent but council debated funding and county responsibility. Warden Gallagher cautioned no definite action exists and residents may object.
Dr Bill Smith urged Georgetown to foster industry by creating an independent industrial commission and promoting a new town image. He cited Delrex Developments as the town’s main land owner and pressed for continued talks, including a June 23 date, to boost investment and curb bad publicity. Mayor Gibbons defended efforts and highlighted water, land, schooling, and labor assets as signs of progress.
Three district girls from Georgetown high school plus two others formed a class of 83 graduates at the Atkinson School of Nursing, Toronto Western Hospital. Miss Mabel Greig received the award and plans public health studies at the University of Toronto while Miss Verlix will study at the University of Western Ontario. Miss Barth joins Western Hospital staff. Fathers and families attended a graduation banquet at Old Mill.
