Roy and Joan Jonson say they and seven Canadian cowboys and 32 horses stranded in Britain will perform despite the failed Canadian show deal. The Royal Lancashire Society offers its grounds for a nine week run with daily performances, with 23 cowboys and cowgirls when assembled.
Mayor Francis denounces secrecy in council committees and blasts councillors for hiding opinions while urging public attendance at meetings. Deputy Reeve and others clash over openness and access as residents and officials trade criticisms of transparency and process.
Georgetown and District High School staff hosted a dinner June 4 to honor Principal J. L. Lambert upon his 30 years of service. A Lambert Scholarship Fund was announced, aims to attract ex-student support, and Lambert thanked the staff while recalling school memories. Ex-staff attendees included Miss F. Luke, Mrs. J. Gunn, Miss D. Stone, and others.
Sister Louis Marie formerly Joan Cummins daughter of Mr and Mrs Joh Cummins of 18 Merriy Street graduated from St Michael's College general arts course in Convocation Hall on Thursday June 3 after Mass at St Basil's on campus. Mrs Cummins attended the convocation and a continental breakfast in Brennan Hall followed by a garden party to conclude the day.
A province funded traffic and planning survey began in Georgetown with Damus and Smith recording traffic at intersections and railway crossings. The origin destination study asks where people come from and go to to identify highway improvement needs for the next two decades.
A planning team with Damus and Smith and a planning consultant projects future needs and growth patterns to locate roads where growth will occur. They will coordinate with the Technical Coordinating Committees including the town and county engineers and police chief. Eleven watchers spent two and a half days surveying with many locals or students. town survey is 75 percent subsidized and the Department of Highways covered an origin study. Cost is estimated at 24000 dollars, with hope of reduction.
A string of thefts Sunday night into Monday morning netted about 300 dollars from Georgetown drug store Delrex Drugs and local businesses. Delrex suffered a forced front door break in with the register damaged and money taken. Ferro Structure Steel and Norval Auto Service also reported petty cash losses after entry by window breaking. Neighbors heard noises around 4 am and police suspect a connected spree in the Metro region.
Seven Georgetown high school students will attend summer seminars funded by local groups. Four students join a United Nations Seminar in Waterloo for five days in late June. Two others go to a Geneva Park Conference in July, and one attends a New York City UN seminar, chosen by a local lodge.
Ward 3 councillors Bill Smith and Roy Ballentine report no support for scrapping the 1042 by law allowing Friday evening openings. merchants and Loblaw’s push for Thursdays also, residents’ interests cited as key. Firemen watched as two old houses on Main Street in Rockwood were demolished to make way for improvements. The Acton Hi-Flyers Club sponsored a model airplane contest on Sunday with about 50 entrants from as far away as the United States.
Holy Cross Separate School Board member Jack Nieuwhof resigned after a 43 vote to establish a French kindergarten in the church basement. Nieuwhof and two other early vote opponents were late arrivals at a special meeting. The motion stalled 4-4 before the resignation.
At a regular meeting Paul Lagge and Ed Le Blanc proposed a Holy Cross Church French kindergarten clause effective September 1945 if suitable space is found. Inspectors J Hodge and G Beaulleau questioned the value of a French English split daily schedule for two hours, amid ongoing boycotts by French-Canadian children and parents.
A wildcat walkout by CN Freight and Express workers delayed the Georgetown Express Office switch from Monday to at least the following Monday. The strike spread to Brampton and cities including Oakville, Hamilton, London, Ottawa, and Brantford, halting local operations as Milton Brooker and colleagues reported standstill conditions. The walkout ended after an agreement announced Monday night between railway negotiators and the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway Transport and General Workers. The dispute centered on perceived abuses of the railway demerit system and its impact on employee records and transfers.
