The Gazette apologizes for a mistaken quote attributed to Councillor Brown regarding mayoral policy and double parking on Main Street. Brown clarifies he supported brief stopping to unload passengers but not double parking, and the paper takes responsibility for the error.
The piece notes Bible sales surpassing Mein Kampf in Germany amid strict religious bans and questions how such a society under Hitler operates. It argues the German people may turn against the war-mad dictator and his cohorts, hoping for survival.
An electrical storm struck the district last Wednesday bringing heavy hail that destroyed many crops. Georgetown felt it, with Limehouse to the Glen area especially hit, including Mr. Oscar Lerch on the 7th Line whose entire crop was reportedly lost, oats flattened and turnips torn up.
Georgetown residents are invited to a Red Cross garden party tomorrow at Mrs. A W Nixon’s home 9th Line. Tickets grant grounds access and entry to afternoon tea and evening entertainment with local talent and outside acts. Proceeds support overseas aid, with donations from major local firms and a fundraising raffle.
It is good news for the working people of the town if not the businessmen that they can again take in the Fair on a Saturday afternoon. With everybody at the fair, there will be little reason why businessmen cannot close their places for an hour or so.
A cold windy day and intermittent showers marked the United Church picnic at Edgewood Park Eden Mills. Despite light attendance, residents enjoyed a setting for sports and races with prizes awarded in swimming running three legged balloon wheelbarrow and other events.
The St George's Church of England Sunday school annual picnic at Huttonville Park drew about seventy five attendees despite intermittent rain. Joe Hall Jr led races in the evening with classes winning prizes for diverse events. A kiss and peanut scramble closed the event, with Rev. W G O Thompson aiding the organizing committee.
WwW G Bell and Mrs W G Mc Dowell won last Thursday’s jitney as crowds enjoyed the event. In the sixteenth 21 end doubles game on Monday night P H Chapenan and P B Coffin defeated E C Thompson and J J Gibbons, with Bell and Richardson beating Fred Thompson and J Kennedy, and Art Reeve with Harold Cleave defeating W G McDowell and Ern Thompson.
A cordial reception honored Reverend J. E. Ostrom and wife at Georgetown Baptist Church on July 17. Members from Georgetown and Acton Baptist congregations attended with clergy from Guelph, St Georges, and Brampton. Mayor Joseph Gibbons offered best wishes as Ostrom vowed to serve in the new field. The evening included a scripture reading, prayers, music, and a courtesy by the Acton quartet. Deacon Harry Wood chaired the event.
The Holy Cross Georgetown and St Josephs Acton Sunday School picnic gathered about 150 members from both churches at Edgar Beeney’s 6th Line farm. Activities included swimming and races for children, with many winners named across multiple age categories. A Red Cross Garden Party the next day urged 25 cents to aid soldiers and British war victims.
Halton County Council hears Judge Munro on equalized assessment changes. Nassagaweya gains a $75,000 decrease split among eight municipalities, Burlington takes $50,000, while Georgetown and Esquesing show small increases of $1,500 and $4,878. A by law sets the county rate at 4.4 mills. expenditures itemized for general purposes, debentures, roads, and education.
A Scottish soldier received a decoration for gallantry. A week later a friend asked what his wife thought. He replied that she was busy and it wasn’t his turn to win.
Thieves struck the Guelph Street service station owned by Bruce Mackenzie for the second time in two months, stealing cigarettes tools and about 100 dollars worth of goods. Glass was broken and the lock forced. Chief W G Marshall investigates. A pay telephone was found ripped from a wall nearby. Earlier break-in in early June yielded cigarettes and spark plugs worth 65 dollars.
The Imperial Section Branch 120 sponsored a bingo and mile of pennies on Saturday raising 76.65 for the Fire Fighters Fund with about 50 dollars donated by the public. Fire Chief Donald Latimer led the day with the Georgetown Fire Brigade assistance. Prizes ranged from groceries to towels and pillows won by local residents including Mrs. Norton, Mrs. Hornby, and Marjory Green.
Spr. Gilbert Pat Gillevet, returned from Britain, arrived in Georgetown after serving with the 1st Holding Unit R.C.E. He reports a 14 day crossing and witnessed a submarine sinking four days out. He saw Georgetown men overseas including Lorne Scots before sailing home. He enters Christie Street Hospital for treatment and hopes to return to overseas service. Spr. and Mrs. Gillevet have three sons in Canadian forces.
A severe storm last week caused deaths and damage in other parts of the province while local areas reported minimal harm. The week featured thunder lightning hail and soaking rain with temperatures generally rising. Civic Holiday is set for August 4th and a bookstore quip notes an illustrated Psalms edition.
Edith Dick R N, chief of the Toronto Military Hospital nursing staff, is announced by Col K G Gray to join the Office of the Director General of Medical Services in Ottawa. She departs to assume duties with Elizabeth Smellie, supervisor in charge of organizing the Women's Army Corps.
In correspondence from Nora to Cora, officers of Jack's regiment appear to be under scrutiny as mess duties shift with transfers. AC2 W D Sargent moves from Oshawa to No 1 IT School in Toronto, while AC2 George Gilmer completes training at Galt and serves at Manning Depot Toronto. Ian MacKenzie, promoted to Pilot Officer, moves to Trenton for instructor training after leave in Alberta. Stewart Young leaves R W Robb’s Drug Store for RCAF service, and Gov. David Hodge recovers in Sussex Hospital after July 9 return. Jack Whitney, with the Veteran Guards of Canada, was home on leave.
Major Frank Pullen reports Halton County raised 1 981 300 dollars or 183 7 percent of its 1 050 000 quota, placing it second in Ontario while Rainy River led with 213 7 percent of its 276 000 objective. Fall exhibit prep urged.
The Ontario Department of Agriculture through J A Carroll lists fall fair dates. Georgetown's Esquesing Agricultural Society fair is planned for September 12 and 13 with other districts including Acton Milton Erin Brampton Orangeville and Cooksville scheduled across September.
