In a Reading dispatch from England, Margaret Butcher describes British civilians clinging to courage and patience amid Luftwaffe blitzes. She recalls office routines, Mondayish days, and the private motto C and P as a rallying theme among workers and neighbors.
The long anticipated rain came last week, too late for grain crops but beneficial for gardens, hoe crops, and measures. Day temperatures averaged 8.7 degrees lower than the prior week, while nights were 2 degrees warmer. Ideal weather for a day’s work and a good night’s sleep. Local weekly records follow the date.
Halton Juniors held its Annual Field Day at Huttonville Park on a Tuesday last week. Due to farm labour shortages the event was altered with a mixed softball tournament featuring Acton Norval and Palermo teams. Acton Juniors won after close wins over Palermo and Norval, and about 200 attended the picnic supper followed by a dance with Jack Mack's Orchestra of Toronto.
Joanna Shortill a lifelong Ballinafad resident died in Guelph General Hospital on Saturday July 12 in her 68th year. She lived on the Shortill homestead before moving to Ballinafad twenty years ago and was active in the United Church. Funeral held Monday July 14 at Ballinafad Church with Rev. George Aitken officiating. interment in Ballinafad Cemetery. Flowers and pallbearers listed. text from Ex 14 15. July W.A. meeting plans field day.
Cash on hand totaling 1086.13 acknowledged as a draw on two watches donated by M. Malina. Funds sent to the Telegram Fund. A Thursday event at the home of Mrs. George Walters raised 10.00 from McNab Bt Neighborhood Club.

Margaret Alberta Bruce and Oliver John Harlow wed last Saturday July 12 at Rev. A W Fosbury's Acton United Church home ceremony. The bride wore blue sheer and pink carnation corsage. attendant Eileen Mabee and groom’s brother Ray Harlow attended. They plan to reside in Georgetown after a short wedding trip.
Georgetown Lions Club held a Cedar Crest Lodge dinner meeting led by new President R. Licata. They planned a Salvage Campaign with paper and magazine collection starting next week and scrap metal rubber collection soon after, plus a moonlight boat cruise to Queenston in August. J. D. Kelly elected Lion Taner and A. C. Welk to the Board of Directors. past year notes highlighted Christmas tree concert bingo Rural Night and donations to war relief funds.
Eva Lillian Samis of Drayton married Charles Willoughby Stockford R C A F yesterday in a private home ceremony attended by family. The Rev Duncan officiated. After a wedding supper the couple left for Virden Manitoba where Stockford teaches as an R C A F instructor. He previously taught at Moorefield Public School and was principal of Uxbridge Public School before enlistment last spring.
Local Orange Lodges joined a Grand Valley parade last Saturday to celebrate the Glorious 12th with procession through the town center. The event drew residents and groups from nearby areas, highlighting festive displays and local participation.
The Herald War Victims Fund gained $100 in a week from three donations. The McNabbt Neighborhood Club gave $10, Mrs. George Walters donated $10 from a social evening at her home on July 10. Jeweler M Malina sent $80 from a raffle proceeds, noting the funds were raised in Georgetown for the Herald War Victims Fund.
Miss Helen McMurchy was guest of honour at a Thornhill lawn party hosted by Mr and Mrs Alvin Robinson on June 27. The community presented her a floor lamp and the Markham 8.8 No.2 pupils gave an electric grill during a tea. An address read in part offered best wishes for her future teaching career and blessings from the gathered community.
Mrs. Robert Puckering and family thank friends for support and sympathy and neighbors for help during the recent loss of their husband and father.
