Esquesing electors choose Thompson over James Ismond who had 86 votes and Julian Reed with 79, while Andy claims a 29 vote plurality as three other candidates trail. Voter turnout is 483 of 4175 eligible.
A Tuesday early morning blaze gutted Erin Store and adjacent apartments on Main Street causing an estimated $100,000 in damage. The store owner Paul Macdonald of Mrin operated a building that previously housed a drug store and grocery.
A funeral service for George Evely of Bolton who died suddenly last Wednesday was held December 18 at David A McClure Funeral Home in Hrampton. He was married to Glenna Leakie formerly of Georgetown and leaves two children Leslie and Terry. Interment followed at Castlemore Cemetery.
James Young was retained as Georgetown deputy reeve after a recount showing a final tally of 1417 for Young and 1411 for Emmerson. The recount, requested by Emmerson, occurred in the town hall with county judge Alan Sprague presiding. Young, a former Ward 2 councillor and current industrial and town planning committee chair, succeeds We. Hunter. Emmerson previously served four years on council before leaving to challenge for deputy reeve.
Georgetown Deputy Reeve Hunter H Hinton of Acton Nassajax’s William J Coulter and William Hunter are named as likely successors to Herb Merry as Halton Warden in 1948. All three have won reeveships and served on council. Some see a break with tradition if Merry is reelected and the 1086 county council keeps influence amid regional governance issues. Dr Carl Martin of Milton previously served two terms as Milton Warden.
Town resident Mrs Alice Maybanks will appear on the Abra Cadabra show on Channel 9 at 11:30 PM on January 3. The program was pretaped December 4.
A special Christmas Eve meeting of the Medical Association and Hospital Board approved creating a commemorative fund in memory of Dr Bernard Bebenck. A committee of four doctors and four board members will decide the memorial form with contributions welcome from individuals and organizations.
Delrex Developent Ltd holdings were unquiled by Metropeliten Helton Developments Co. Mayor Joseph Dibbens and President J Bruce Melaighlin released the details to the Herald. The Georgetown area promotion centers on industrial sites and a major subdivision, with the Delros subdivision created in 1954 by Rex Heeles and annexed by Georgetown, incorporating multiple parcels and factories.
Ontario Provincial Police said an inquest will be held into the death of Dr. Bebenek 32 after a two car crash on an ice covered Main St south of Georgetown. Eight others injured, some transported by ambulance and police.
A new General Fireproofing Company of Canada plant begins construction on Todd Road in Georgetown, starting January 27. Cunninghamtimp Ltd. of Toronto handles design and build for a 150,000 square foot facility to produce metal desks chairs and filing equipment for the Canadian market and beyond, with 75 to 100 initial jobs and up to 200 later. The deal includes land of 45 acres, cost cooperation from Georgetown council, and proximity to Toronto labor pools. The Georgetown plant will serve Canada and possibly other Commonwealth nations, while the U.S. main plants include Youngstown Ohio and others in Sturgis Michigan Charleston Forest City San Luis Obispo and Ellicottville.
