Deputy Reeve A Norton praised Thom L Lyons as he retires from town council after many years. Lyons received 28 memorials from the council and town officials as the group hosted a gathering at Mayor and Mrs Jack Arm's home after the final 1955 meeting.
The public school board adds three new teachers for January as part of staff expansion. Thomas Allison of Celadon Wast is fired and previously taught at Brantford and Mono. A third temporary classroom will be set up in Knox Church auditorium due to rapid town growth and crowded schools.
The Lions Club hosts a Saturday parade with floats, clowns, bands, and Santa in a festive turnout. Winners include Sam Younsat and Walter Biehn among others. multiple gift and prize floats listed with a long roster of participants and vehicles.
Knox Sunday School held a Christmas concert last Friday with a supper served by Knox USA members. Rev. Alex Calder chaired the program featuring carols, recitations, a Frosty the Snowman scene, a world on Christmas Day playlet with national costumes, a piano solo, and multiple class performances under supervisor Miss Janet McDougall.
David Simpson of Pearl Street Milton drove west toward Main Street when Clifford Loweks of Nelson Street Brampton tried to turn down Mill and collided. Damage to both vehicles was about 300 dollars. Georgetown High School held a carol service at St George’s Anglican Church on Monday afternoon December 18 conducted by the Georgetown Ministerial Association and the students. The program included Joy to the World Silent Night a bidding prayer and a reading from Isaiah by Neil Wallace with David Smith of Grade IX leading aCarol.
Five new members were introduced at the Fairview Inn Rotary meeting by Jack Muckart. The newcomers are Ernie Pearce Ralph Ursel Bob Barber Gordon Bowers and Bill Carr. Walter Copeland spoke on sponsored projects and John Gunna presented a watch to Milton Robertson who won it in a fall fair guessing draw.
The Halton and Georgetown Poultry Association held a successful euchre at Odd Fellows Hall with multiple tables in play. Ladies first prize went to Mrs. Audrey Wilson, second to Mac Fountain, consolation to Alice Wilson. In the gentlemen’s division Bill Wilson took first, Frank Petch second, and Clare Wilson the consolation. Draw winners for fowl included Bert Dodds Acton Harvey Lusty Georgetown V Kein Acton Clarence Spence Georgetown and Clare Wilson Georgetown.
The Norval United Choir held a candlelight Christmas program at Norval United Church on Friday December 16 with song and story and a revised carvice. A reception followed at the parsonage hosted by the women of the congregation. A Sunday service on December 18 featured students from Norwal public school performing carols and songs as a senior choir.
North Halton high school board held its final meeting with discussion on Acton region growth and funding. John Gunn and Mrs. J L Lambert join as half time teachers at Georgetown. Caretaker salaries rise by 300 dollars to 3660. A steel workers union scholarship offer is accepted for Milton students. Bus service expansion to include Stone School areas is approved.
A four person family is homeless after a January fire destroyed their Silvercreek home caused by an overheated stove. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Munt and daughters Phyllis 13 and June 6 escaped with only the clothes they wore. Neighbors and Salvation Army aid, Ballinsfad rooms, and a Herald fund box are organized to help the Munts obtain clothing and housing as Rev. Fred Fletcher leads the relief drive.
A 1036 plan calls for a new high school in Georgetown with possible site at Masterman acre adjoining the park. Acton school board will interview the Department of Education and may purchase land to build a full or broom school as soon as possible.
Sunday evening St John’s United Church hosted a pageant titled Light of Men depicting Christ’s life from manger to Calvary through speech and song. Cast included Barbara Alcott as Mary and Judy McCumber as Angel of Love with multiple shepherds angels and apostles listed. directed by Mrs. Vern McCumber, Mrs. Al Zeraviev and Mrs. Bob Wyatt.
Sunday afternoon the fire department held a party for its wives and children. Santa arrived by sleigh and distributed gifts, followed by a hosted lunch.
Christmas program at St George’s Anglicaa Friday featured senior Sunday School pupils welcoming Santos on his second visit. Jack Armstrong and Harvey Dewhurst chaired with Rev Kenneth Richardson assisting. Performances included instrumental numbers by Armstrong Fiddler Bennett Stewardson and skits by girls taught by Mrs Arnold Bradley Dawson and Pred Armstrong. Junior choir sang an Indian carol Jease Brandford and Dewhurst recited a humorous poem. Movie closing showed carol scenes with background by the Sealle Bell singers.
A ledger titled Georgetown Community Swimming Pool Donation Lie lists numerous names with amounts donated such as 22 058 54 and various small sums. Names include Fred P. Hachman Misses Moore Cc Burt Lorne S. Erwin Robert Allen-Main St N Harvey W. Armstrong and others alongside totals and cents.
