Council Holds 37th Meeting Amid Layoffs And By-law Questions

The 37th and final council meeting of the year dealt with a nonconforming house on the highway, a plan to pay memorial service expenses via a by law blocked by the Department of Municipal Affairs, and a halt on sewerage work until weather improves. Officials approved relief staffing and the $31,000 sewerage debentures, with loans from local banks to bridge funds. A street light near the CNR track and tree removals were ordered, and warrants for late tax collections were reported.

December W I meeting in Ashgrove raises funds for hospitals

The December meeting at the homes of Mrs. George and Mrs. Harvey Nurse attracted 35 ladies and 13 children. President Mrs. Charles Austin led the session as donations of 1000 dollars to Sick Children’s Hospital and 50 dollars to Peel Memorial Hospital Brampton were approved.

Christmas Party for Check Line Forum Members

Members of the Cheer Line forum gathered at the home of Jr. and Mrs. L De Vries on Monday for their annual Christmas party with Bob Nicol as chair. The event featured piano by Mrs Hazen Graham and a quartet including Joe Ross George Siville Lykle DeVries Jr and Ted Leslie, plus piano selections Donny Curry recitation and accordion pieces by Paul Barber. Mr and Mrs Fred Brown sang duets and a progressive barn dance ended the evening with a buffet supper. Guests included Mr and Mrs William Sproule of Toronto Miss Dorothy Stone and Mrs George Wingfield.

Stone School Christmas Party Brightens Evening

On Wednesday December 14 the Stone School hosted a Christmas program for parents and friends. Chairman Mr. George Burt presided as pupils performed Mother Gooses Christmas and The Four Rebels with Theresa Beeney and Marilyn Souther in leading roles. Santa distributed gifts, then Miss Doris Harding and Clarence Varey provided music for dancing.

Candle Light Carol Service at St George's Church

Candles lit a tranquil scene for a Christmas Carol service at St George's Church England last Sunday. The program featured St George's Choir directed by W F Bradley with Mrs Bradley on violin and the Girls' Choir directed by Mrs Dawson. Soloists included Mrs Leslie Tomlinson Mrs Jack Thompson Miss Sylvia Lambert Thomas Warnes and Jack Thompson during an anthem The Carol of the Bells and various carols enriched the service.

Lions Club Plans Skating Carnival Next Week

The Lions Club and Recreation Commission announce a skating carnival in the arena next Wednesday night as a holiday feature. All ages are invited in costume with prizes, speed and novelty events, lucky draws, and family entertainment. Santa Claus will referee a novice game between local teams at the carousel wall.

Father William Lindsay Dies After Long Illness in Milton

William John Lindsay died at his Milton home on Saturday December 17 after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at Grace Church of England with interment at Hornby Presbyterian Cemetery. He was in his 81st year and is survived by his wife Alice Maude Brooks and two daughters Laura Jamieson of Toronto and Marie Lindsay a Georgetown Public School teacher.
