With Georgetown's centennial fall fair only a week away organizers expect a record turnout for exhibits and events. The program includes steady harness racing and features for the popular crowd, with plans for lady riders among the attractions.
Report of a community picnic at Stanizy Park featuring events such as a legged race a needle and thread race and a horseshoe pitching contest. Jean Lockhurnt won a competition and Spence excelled in horseshoes while a ball game saw Press Line defeat Shipping 14 to 10.
H L Hutt reports a Yukon cold wave drifting over the continent reaching the Atlantic seaboard. Despite expectations of early frosts heavy clouds kept temperatures milder and mortals wore extra blankets in midsummer. The freeze slowed corn and fruit ripening and Concord grapes may not improve over last year. Frigid figures for the week follow.
A large crowd attended the funeral for John R. Scott at Limehouse Presbyterian Church with interment in Limehouse Cemetery. Out of town mourners included Will Dobbie and family of Cleveland Ohio, Wil Lane of Meyronne Saskatchewan, and friends from Kitchener Wingham Toronto Acton and Limehouse. Notable tributes came from sister Kate Lane brother Joe and family Cliff Hutchinson and family and many local groups including Lions Club and Georgetown Girls Pipe Band.
A couple from Timmins, Mr. and Mrs. Londestboro, reside in the city while hunting for housing in Georgetown. The man, formerly with the Research Enterprises Ltd. during the war years, is now employed elsewhere as they adjust housing plans.
In my sad bereavement I thank friends and neighbors for sympathy and kindness shown after the loss of my husband. Mrs. J. R. Scott expresses gratitude for support during this difficult time.
In Georgetown the Recreational Council plans to buy a piano and oil heaters for the old town hall as part of summer rehabilitation. The items are on order and should be installed before cold weather.
Public school gets a new coat of paint ahead of opening next Tuesday. New home planned for Mr and Mrs Ray Harley on Durham Street beside Walter Richardson. Mr and Mrs Allan Goodlett leave Carrolls to manage Tillsonburg store. Mr O T McKay’s Charles Street house painted buff and green. Dolores Broomshead sustains head cut after horseback incident. Brenda Robinson to attend Shaw’s school in Toronto for business studies. Glen Garage premises by Harold Schenk and Frank Van Wyck near completion. Mr R R McKibbin builds a new home on the Glen Road. Gordon Martin and family move from Duncan home to a Murdock Street apartment.
Norval residents host a farewell event for district servicemen on Friday August 30 at Memorial Recreation Centre. Engraved watches and mantel clocks will be presented to families including Mr C W Carney and the sister of Pte George. Two Norval POWs Gordie Brown and Orme Carter attend with Col Louis Keene in charge of presentations. A garden party and variety show follow with Lou Skuce Violet Murray Margene Benny and Dorothy among performers lasting from 8:30 p.m.
Georgetown War Service Recognition Committee plans a 16000 fund drive to buy 50 bond for each former service member from World War I. Campaign runs two weeks with LéRoy Dale and W F Bradley leading a town canvass amid review of a 204 name preliminary list.
The Ashgrove Women’s Institute met Tuesday afternoon at Doris After's home. Doris Brownridge led the motto Manners make the Gentleman and Bernice Wilson sang Plow Gently Sweet Afton. Betty F Ruddell shared Chicago trip photos and souvenirs, with lunch served by the girls. Doris Brownridge earned praise for completing high school subjects and plans to attend Toronto Normal School in September. Mr Jamie Mitchell and Mr Norman Hutchinson visited from Toronto and Cheltenham, staying with the Birds.
Mrs. Will Lawson and daughter Beth of London Ontario visit Stewart Town this week. The Sunday School picnic at Huttonville Park last Saturday drew most scholars who enjoyed games races swings teeter totters and lunch.
Mr and Mrs Arthur J Ruddell announce their engagement at Ashgrove United Church on Saturday September 14 at 3 o'clock.
Madeleine Perron daughter of Mrs E Perron Ottawa married Sgt Allan Young son of Mr and Mrs E E Young Peterborough formerly of Georgetown at St Theresa's rectory with Rev George Larose officiating A reception for families at Wayside Inn followed. The couple will reside in Ottawa where the groom is stationed with National Defence Headquarters.
At Hornby a quiet Sunday evening saw hay straw and leaves fall from the sky during the service with no strong wind. Reporters and residents found these items in churchyards roads and yards as summer ends and school nears. Wedding invitations announce the marriage of Evelyn Ball to Lloyd Pickering.
Marjorie Helen Bilton daughter of Mrs Bilton and the late Mr Robert Bilton of Acton becomes engaged to Albert Victor Tennant son of Mr and Mrs Tennant of Georgetown The wedding is planned at the United Church Acton on Saturday September 1 at 3 o clock local time
Town social pages list visitors from Cookstown to Toronto with summer trips to Port Colborne and Meaford. Labor Day weekend in Georgetown features a three day celebration with a street dance, bingo, a park concert, bicycle racing by Century Cycle Club of Hamilton, a Halton Peel beauty contest, open tug of war prize, softball challenge, and a concert by Doris Hulls Orchestra finale.
A wind storm struck the B. Van Vliet farm in Norval causing the driving shed silo and chicken house to collapse. Trees were uprooted fences were blown down and darkness covered Georgetown for a few moments. At Hornby there was no wind though debris fell from the sky.
Minas Mamie Camobell and Mrs Pearl Kennedy of Acton enjoy a plane trip to Buffalo N Y today. Mrs Harry Clarke Sr of Limehouse visits with daughter Mrs Frank Murfin and Ilene Gostick who holiday with cousin Mariene Bludd return to Claremont Monday. Marlene and Doreen Hornby join as guests. Roberta Woon returns to Toronto after two weeks with cousin Disame Hillock. Eric Warnes of South Porcupine greets Herald with a note and photo from Timmins Daily Press. Alex Merrill of Timmins marked his 30th wedding anniversary. Merrill formerly worked for the Toronto and Suburbs.
