A long list of students from Georgetown High School middle and upper school earned multiple honors in Ancient History, English, Modern History, mathematics, science, French, German, and other subjects. The report names many students with their awarded grades across several departments and subjects.
A tire blowout sent a car veering and flipping twice on the Queen Elisabeth Way Saturday afternoon. None injured. driver George Gilman of Toronto and passengers Mrs. W. V. Grant Jr., Mrs. John Patterson, and John Krapp of Georgetown escaped with minor bruises. They had been returning from a harvest shift after missing seats on a crowded bus.
Captain Harold Marshall returns to town on discharge from the army after serving with the Canadian Postal Corps in Ottawa. He is son of Police Chief W. G. Marshall and Mrs. Marshall, formerly staff at the Georgetown Post Office. his wife and children Paul and Tommy have waited with him in Ottawa during his stationing.
Four more British war brides and their children settled in Georgetown last week. Mrs Gear Hayes arrived aboard the Letitia, with Mrs J Schofield and son Roger aboard the Aquitaine, along with Mrs R J Guild and daughter Gandra, and Mrs Herbert.
Mrs Lykle De Vries sails for Holland from Montreal aboard the Prins Willem to visit relatives in Rotterdam for two months. A Canada resident for 22 years the trip marks her third return to the homeland with head quarters planned at Almelo with her parents Mr and Mrs A H Ledeboer. She hoped to attend her parents golden wedding anniversary on July 24 but could not secure passage. She remained in contact by telephone with the Ledeboers on that occasion.
Bob Eason suffered a severe hand injury at the Provincial Paper Coating mill after his hand was caught in a coating machine. Surgeons feared possible amputation but the finger survived. After treatment at Guelph General Hospital he returned home.
Georgetown Council agreed to buy 3.5 acres from Cedarvale Farm owner E B Tyers for 1000 to support a 50 veterans homes project. A contract has been let for 23 houses, but material shortages and strikes across Canada threaten completion this year.
At Acton Municipal Office on Thursday evening August 15 the Local Ration Board accepted the resignation of Mrs. Clarence Hayes of Georgetown and appointed Mrs. Sidney to replace her.
The Dominion Store sports a new paint job in yellow and red. Dennis and Brenda Bell acquire a pony cart. A 45 inch puff-ball on display at the Herald window. A Teen Town Hall blackout during Friday’s dance. Alex Hume’s Mill Street agency undergoes red Insul-brick renovations. Local residents report good mid-summer flowers. Apartments above Brill Store and Richardson’s Hardware change tenants. Howard May moves to Brampton and takes over Willoughby real estate. he’s likened to Tom Hewson of the flower town.
Dr Fréd B Hutt professor of animal genetics at Cornell receives the 1846 Borden award of 1000 dollars and a gold medal at a dinner of the International Baby Chick Association in the Jefferson Hotel St Louis. He has long worked in poultry breeding and genetics, with studies across North America and Europe.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Lyons announce the engagement of their youngest daughter Josepha Kathleen to John David Lawson only son of Mr and Mrs Angus Lawson Acton The marriage will take place at Georgetown United Church on September 14.
Mrs. J Brandford spent last week in New Toronto with Mrs. J Clark and Mrs H McNally of Guelph visited on Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs Fred McNally. Bandmaster A H Perrott visited Brampton with his wife and son John. Miss Virginia Chapman left for Glen Mohr Camp Lake Simcoe for two weeks. Miss Doris Kean visits in Flushing Long Island with her uncle and aunt. Mrs W E Nodwell and Mrs Marion Barber return from two weeks at Mary Lake. Others visit Mary Lake Norland and Burlington with relatives. Several families vacation in Ontario Michigan and New York while guests stay at local cottages and hotels. Dr. Hugh Templin publisher Fergus News-Record visits Herald Office. he is president of the Canadian Weekly Newspaper Association.
The Limehouse Women's Institute celebrated 25 years with an afternoon tea at Memorial Hall attended by 115 guests from Guelph, Georgetown, Dublin Institute, Erin Township and area. A program featured solos, recitations, a life membership award, and greetings from other branches. A follow up garden party in Georgetown raised funds for local service personnel.
John Robert Scott a Limehouse district resident and longtime Presbyterian member died after an operation at Toronto General Hospital on Sunday August 18 following two months of illness. He was 69, born on the family farm lot 23 concession 6, lived there in retirement, and saw the homestead owned by the family over 100 years. Surviving are his wife Elizabeth Hall and five children, plus six brothers and sisters. Funeral at Limehouse Presbyterian Church followed by interment in Limehouse Cemetery.
Mrs Dickenson attended the Royal Regiment Memorial Service at the Cenotaph City Hall in Toronto. Dieppe Day observances honored the British Empire’s service members, with crosswomen and tributes noted in the ceremony.
