The Herald prints an apology after receiving an explanatory letter from Jack Farquharson. He cites a salesman’s defalcation and delays in orders as causes and notes efforts to settle past accounts. One complainant reports photo orders arrived by mail last week.
Local report tracks George C. Burton of Burton Map Directories as he travels from Georgetown to Orangeville Fergus and Palmerston while chasing a fraud charge. Ten merchants paid 23 dollars and 50 cents for maps. no formal charge yet, but risk of action remains.
Anne Anderson Perry publisher of the Elora Express returns home after nine weeks with her sister in Minneapolis. She will resume editorship of the paper this week. In her absence Mardie MacDonald of Toronto acted as editor of the Repress.
Mrs. Lena Margaret Holmes McKay died suddenly at Guelph General Hospital at 61. A Knox Presbyterian Church member active in Red Cross work and golf, she leaves a daughter Mrs. Eric Allan of St Thomas and a late daughter Marion. Rev D D Davidson conducted a private funeral at her residence. pallbearers listed. burial in Greenwood Cemetery Georgetown.
Following Lieut-Gen A D McNaughton’s promotion to command a new corps, CASF reshuffles reach Georgetown. Captain Gordon Sutherland is named to 1st Canadian Division Headquarters as general staff officer chemical warfare with rank of major. Lieut J A Early becomes season officer with 3rd Brigade Headquarters under Brigadier Potts with rank of captain.
Wesley Cook was laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery Georgetown at 3 pm after a yearlong illness following a fall on August 20th. He farmed in Ern Township before moving to Georgetown and later lived with his brother David on George Street. Survived by two sisters and several grandchildren, he was a longtime member of Georgetown United Church with services led by Rev BP C Overend and Rev A O W Foreman. Pallbearers included John Snow Bernard Miller John Cole John Miller Fred Shortill and Peter Ferguson.
Mrs Mary Gillevet learns son Pte James Gillevet has arrived in England after enlisting with the Royal Highland Light Infantry in Hamilton last September. James, 24, previously served seven years with the Lorne Scots P D and H. Regiment. His father Sapper Gilbert Gillevet, now overseas, served twelve years in the British army. Gerald Gillevet also enlisted in Hamilton with the Royal Highland Light Infantry. Canadian Navy personnel now about 10 000 officers and men on active service.
Halton County hears that regulations now require rifles and shotguns to be registered by September 15 at police or RCMP stations with permits needed for purchase. Aliens and importers must secure Ottawa permits. voluntary, free registration booths aided by 900 volunteers led by LeRoy Dale and Amos Mason, thanking all participants.
Inspector Partridge reports a Monday evening gathering of about ninety youths from Toronto and area at the Misses Moore home on Main Street. The Presbyterian Young People's Society held its fourth closing summer meeting with songs, games, fellowship, offerings, worship, scripture reading, and thanks to the hosts.
Halton County mourns Samuel H. McGibbon laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery on August 22. Pioneer Milton family links, longtime Georgetown businessman, lacrosse team manager, philanthropist and 32nd degree Scottish Rite member. Survived by three brothers, two sisters, and seven children. Funeral conducted with Masonic rites under War. Bro. Telford McKay.
James Thomas Mullin died after a three and a half week illness at his son Gordon Mullin’s Alden Village home in Plymouth Michigan. A Glen Williams resident, he had lived with relatives in Glen Williams and spent winters in Michigan and with his daughter Mrs Ethel Wilkinson in Toronto. He was 78. A funeral service conducted by Rev D D Davidson of Knox Presbyterian Church was held on Monday.
Jean Evans daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter T Evans of Georgetown married Roy Martin Smale son of Mrs Annie A Smale Freeman Ont with Rev F C Overend officiating The bride wore white silk organdy with veil and train The bridal party included maid of honor Miss Margaret Evans and bridesmaids Miss Bernice McDonald and Miss Ruth Schweitzer The best man was Mr Burt Sovereign and ushers were Messrs Jack Evans and James Evans After the ceremony a reception at the Evans home featured garden decor The couple planned a wedding trip to northern Ontario and will reside in Freeman Ontario
Miss Mabel Chave attended the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs John J Daley of 110 Spencer Avenue Toronto. He was chief librarian at Osgoode Hall for fifty years. A mass at Old St Marys followed by a wedding breakfast for about fifty relatives and friends. Mrs Daley’s daughters include Mrs John Harkins and Mrs Jerry Patterson. a son Marold died years ago.
Miss Mary Luella Cormack of Arthur Ontario wed Hilliard Mackenzie Allan of Toronto at High Park United Church Toronto. Rev J D Parks officiated with music by T C Tovell. Bride wore pink marquisette gown with talisman roses. They plan to reside in Haliburton Kawartha Lakes after a brief honeymoon.
