McDonald's on Guelph Street sponsors a Saturday fundraiser from 1 to 4 pm selling sundaes and balloons to support muscular dystrophy research and the local firefighters charity drive. The event is part of MD Carnival promotions and highlights community involvement by corporate sponsors.
Acton residents push for independence from Halton Hills, with Norm Elliott stating near completion of talks with provincial social minister Darcy McKeough. A 2000-name petition backs a feasibility study to form Acton as an independent municipality, despite regional concerns and tax implications.
In a special works committee meeting William Morrison said dewatering for sewer work in Mullen Place has dried area wells. David Estrin, representing 30 households and 100 residents, urged Mountclair Developments to supply bottled water or fund new wells if supply is not restored. about 60 residents attended the council meeting.
Acton council released a 200000 tender for a larger firehall while firefighters appeal to delay citing little gain beyond two extra days and no extra parking for volunteers. Fire Chief Mick Holmes said meeting opposition and costs, with two weeks delay risking higher winter prices. Council authorized open tendering with a Sept 1 closing date amid debate on priorities and inflation.
Halton Hills council heard a petition from about 65 property owners opposing higher taxes to fund off street parking in Acton downtown. Rhoda Shoemaker cited surveys showing 71.6 percent of storeowners and 74.6 percent of tenants oppose taxation for parking. A two week plan report will assess costs while councils consider next steps.
Two people died in Halton Hills over the weekend in separate crashes. Victoria Ann Campbell, 25, of Brampton was struck by a car driven by Gary Corbett Newens, 22, of Brampton in the early hours of Saturday. Michael Dennis Smart, 11, of Georgetown died Aug 12 when a car he rode in left the road near Trafalgar Road. Police ask for information to locate Victoria Campbell between 11:45 p.m. Friday and 1:00 a.m. Saturday, and urge anyone with details to contact Supt. Floyd Schwantz or visit Georgetown police headquarters.
