Ray Olivier, president of Local 154, states ratification not unanimous but strike ends. Postal workers gain 21 cents an hour raise retroactive to August 1967, ending after three weeks of no mail. Postmen return to work as publishers relay heavy mail including daily papers and magazines.
Raymond Hilon Thompson a senior Georgetown merchant with a 50 year career in hardware plumbing and heating died in Georgetown hospital on August 6 after weeks of illness following a stroke. Born in Georgetown he learned the trade, ran the business under his name and was active in St George's Anglican Church and local orders. He leaves a wife a daughter several siblings and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at Harold C. McClure Funeral Home with cremation following.
A two car collision on Highway 24 near Erin Saturday fatalized John Lenz 85 Mill Street and John Alan Bulloch of Alton. The drivers died instantly. Peter Fong 10 and Steven McNamara 9 were treated at Georgetown hospital with arm injuries. Steven released Monday. Funeral was Monday at Harold C. McClure Funeral Home with Rev. Alex Calder officiating in absence of Rev. Norman Young. The victims were local residents with ties to Orangeville, Abitibi Paper, and Bowmanville.
A city council meeting on Monday night passed a motion about defining parking versus stopping for Main Street bus service. The motion directs the Parking Authority to place proper bus stops on Main Street after August 6, citing Highway Traffic Act definitions. The measure prompted debate over authority and legal steps before any action by the Parking Authority.
Ernest Forgrave Georgetown District High School Board administrator and secretary treasurer announced a change of plans to seek a seat on the new Hatten County Board of Education. He has held his current post since May 1962 and previously served on the old North Salton district board from 1955 to 1959.
W J Beatty recently retired from Acton Heardmore firm and was honored at a dinner dance at Acton Music Centre. He was made a member of the heardrut directors and received a leather bound book of letters from close associates. Presentations followed a motion vote of three to two with Dr Young Francis Emmerson in support and the Mayor Dr Hole opposing. Reeve Hunter and others were absent.
Special guests included We and Mrs Bennett and Mr and Mrs We with Mr Dickson and Mrs Dickson and BL Mehean. Mr Dickson is vice president of Canada Packers and chairman of the Beardmore board. Mr Mehean is Canada Packers president. Earlier Mr Heatly was honoured at a Mohawk Inn gathering amid representatives. An accident was listed among major events.
A 1064 Pontise driven by Gordon Rees of Queen Street sustained 250 in damage after a vehicle approaching from the Canadian Na exhibition venue collided on Friday near the intersection of Guelph and Jolie Streets. Herb SpHver witnesses described the onset of darkness as a factor. The crash occurred during Friday evening traffic tied to school registrations and textbook sales as students and teachers headed home.
A Saturday noon accident at a Weber Drive house excavation claimed the life of two year old Glen Philip Osborne, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Osborne. The boy drowned in about four feet of water near Kennedy School while playmates and rescuers attempted revival. Firemen and ambulance crews were unable to save him. funeral services were held Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Collins of the Christian and Missionary Alliance officiating. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery.
A tense council meeting followed a deadly accident at a water filled excavation. Haiton Hills association members urged a safety panel with two members from each ward. Dr. Wheldon Kammerson and officials urged enforcement against unfenced excavations and open sewers. A bylaw change to require fencing and drainage was passed unanimously with penalties and budget implications discussed.
The report notes inspector Sullivan found three issues and calls for immediate action. Ratepayers Association president warns of firearm dangers in the area and urges supervised access. Mr Berry seeks formation of a Safety Board to advise council on protective measures.
