Downtown festivities unfold this weekend with a street dance on Friday night and a performance by the Girls Pipe Band. Free pancakes at United Gas on Friday plus a bazaar atmosphere as merchants display wares. The event continues Saturday night in the park with a garden party and fastball game, drawing families and locals alike.
Dr. David McEwen joined Dr. Brian Buckrell at Georgetown Animal Clinic. A 1967 Ontario Veterinary College graduate from the University of Guelph, he previously practiced at McGilvary Veterinary Hospital in Toronto and Western Animal Clinic in London. He and his wife reside in Stewarttown. The clinic will focus on companion animals with limited equine work remaining.
A pile of paper boxes behind Loblaws was set on fire Sunday afternoon around six. Fire Chief Jack Cunningham urges daily commercial garbage pickups to curb the rash of blazes. Earlier, a fire broke out under a cottage floor on the Vaughan property, causing little damage. A shed fire on the 5th Side road and 9th line was extinguished before firemen arrived.
The Georgetown District Red Cross Branch assisted at an industrial blood donor clinic held at Northern Electric in Brampton on Friday August 8. Volunteers Mrs A M Sutherland Mrs F Whitaker RN Mrs D Hancock Mrs L G Bunton Mrs G M Stuttard Mrs C Kreutzkamp and Mrs D Bullock worked all day. Ninety three blood packs were collected.
Brampton’s Vince Mountford, fresh from Shelburne’s old time fiddlers contest, will emcee a Georgetown Park garden party Saturday night after a fastball game between Glen Williams and Norval. Pony rides and a refreshment booth delight children. a photo shows Mountford alongside 9 year old Don Reed of Sudbury in Shelburne’s novelty division.
Residents outside Glen Williams lose street light charges after Esquesing council, in a heated session, decides to drop the tax. The dispute centers on lighting along Confederation Street and near Stewarttown hill and a golf course curve, with residents calling it unsafe for pedestrians. The reeve and county warden promised to review the boundary, while Dr. Ken Marshall and Dr. Russell Miller questioned timing and scope of assessments. Joe Ross obtained a new hangar permit for his Ross Lake flying field as council approved the plumbing inspector hire for Esquesing.
Terra Cotta Inn near the Credit River changes hands to Mr and Mrs Cedric Greenhill from England who arrived in 1961. They plan to carry the Farrars tradition with lunches dinners and high teas in the grounds while awaiting liquor license approval. The Greenhills join a Toronto syndicate including Ernie Balmer Donald Malcolm and Mrs Henry Galle.
Georgetown Agricultural Society plans the big Saturday Garden Party at Georgetown Park with a 7 pm Glen Williams versus Norval fastball, then an 8:30 pm stage show starring Vince Mountford and Seppo Leivo among others. Pony rides, refreshment booth, and entertainment for all ages headline the event.
One minor accident occurred this week when a 1958 Chevrolet driven by Graham Nichol rear ended a fence at 6 Rexway Drive. The impact caused $75 in damage as Nichol, son of Willowdale, exited the Dairy Queen parking lot.
Mountainview residents led by George Cook urged the council to push developers on disclosure when buying homes amid unpaved roads and slow improvements. Mayor Emmerson cited highway approvals and a $262,000 grant out of $646,000 requested, with no Mountainview funds this year.
Peggy Treahy of 11 Carol Street joins ARC Industries workshop for adults with retardation in Hornby as supervisor. She previously served Georgetown public library staff and active in North Halton Association for the Mentally Retarded since its start. Her appointment follows the June death of ABC director Harry Isham. His widow becomes director. Isham died June 14 in Toronto General Hospital after collapsing at a workshop dinner and dance. Born May 4, 1910 in Birmingham England, he served 23 years in the Royal Navy including World War II. He moved to Canada in 1956, lived in Etobicoke, then Milton. Surviving wife Winnifred. sons Edward Milton, David Port Credit, Colin Dartmouth NS, Russell Newmarket, Gareth Perth Australia, Richard Milton. sisters Grace and Nell in Birmingham. Funeral June 16 at McKersie Funeral Home. Legion and NH A MLA members attended. Isham cremated at Weston. He long led local association work for the mentally retarded and chaired 1969 Flowers of Hope campaign. previously adult services chair of NHLAALR.
Sharon Hume Halton County Dairy Princess will compete at the CNE on Friday evening August 15. She will speak on Halton dairying, face a three judge panel, milk a cow, and contend with Dairy Princesses from York Wellington Elgin and Dundas. Preliminaries run all next week with final judging August 27. The national winner earns a trip to Great Britain and a year of tours before attempting the 1970 title. Beth Stansell of Fenlon County was last year’s provincial princess.
Nine of twelve candidates completed the Red Cross leader course at the community swimming pool this year. The nine who passed the test, second highest Red Cross award, are Susan Collett Colleen Cummins Beverley Gummer Katharine Keire Stephen Lister Patricia Monckton Robert Sargent Paul Savoie and Deborah Young.
In Halton County the board reversed plans to drop intra town bus service. A central pickup near George Kennedy School replaces previous routes, setting the farthest student walk at 1.7 miles. Vern Kirby of Glen Williams wins the threebus contract for Georgetown High School.
Gwen Paterson of Georgetown District High School is among 624 Ontario Young Voyageurs touring Canada this summer. The Grade 11 student heads to Labrador City on August 17, traveling with a group of 12 girls and 12 boys led by escorts. The program, funded by federal and provincial governments, costs nothing to students and has moved about 15,000 learners in five years. The Toronto departure includes a stop in Ottawa on August 26.
Roland Sparling, a Duncan Dr. physician heading to Biafra to inspect the Canal relief Constellation crash, will visit the graves of four relief crew members killed in the accident. Victims include Gary Libbus of Toronto, Vince Wakely of Montreal, Don Merriam of Kingston, and Raymond Levique of Quebec City.
The McGibbon Hotel plans a 48 square foot neon sign, deemed large earlier. Council initially blocked it for overpowering Main Street but reexamined and allowed it 5-2 after Dr. Ern Hyde argued it is smaller than a rival sign and less prominent than others. Observers noted the sign’s intent to stand out for advertising.
Monday council discussed three issues for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce project at Main and Mill. Architect Mr Hallford noted the old by-law limits land coverage to 50 percent, parking at one space per 200 square feet, and a single advertising sign. The bank plans to replace a three story with new structures, moving temporarily to Dr and Mrs R Te Paul’s Mill Street home. Planning chair Ern Hyde said old by-law remains in effect until a new plan is adopted, and council will handle sign applications individually, with Mayor Emmerson advising consultation with Municipal Planning consultants for guidance.
The council heard about 50 damage claims after a heavy rainstorm on July 28. Basements flooded at multiple homes, water reached first floor levels, cracking floors and walls. A We ber Drive home reported three feet of water in a basement bedroom, while a Fagan Drive residence had water inflow to the cellar. Mud and gravel halted pool operations for two days as residents faced substantial damage to furniture and appliances.
Georgetown sent an ore representative to Brampton city parade on Saturday as part of Derry Day activities. John Beattie of 80 River Drive, a member of Royal Black Preceptory No. 111, was among the marchers.
