Guelph to revive county fair after twenty years

After a 20 year absence Guelph plans a four day modern style fair at Centennial Arena with a country atmosphere. Len Gaudette says it will be the biggest in the area featuring midway sides shows wrestling boxing auctions and daily entertainment by Billy Meek Cy Leonard and others. Admission is 50 cents for adults and 2 cents for youngsters with free daytime shows. Mayor Paul Mercer to open the event on August 14 releasing 1000 pigeons and rides discounted until 6 pm. Children’s day includes blueberry pie eating contests and Lakota Indian demonstrations.

Six Minor Injuries from Town Holiday Accidents

Six people sustained injuries in Georgetown over the past week in multiple crashes. A 1965 Mustang driven by Gunner Sorenson hit the back of Loretta Thompson’s 1969 Ford on Guelph Street opposite IGA at 9 p.m., causing about $1,800 plus $1,200 damage. Betty Sargent was cut on the face and treated at Georgetown Hospital. Separate noon-hour crashes involved a Yamaha motorcycle, a 1966 Ford, and other vehicles, with injuries ranging from cuts and scrapes to a knee injury. total damages cited include $100, $30, $50, and $45 to various vehicles. Additional accidents included a collision at Guelph Rexway with about $225 damage and a two-car smash on Guelph Street opposite IGA with $125 damage. A Brampton driver hit a fire hydrant after pulling from a lot, causing $175 damage to a 1966 Pontiac.

New Minister Serves Alliance Church in Georgetown

Georgetown reports the Alliance Church welcomes David Phillips as its new minister replacing Rev. Paul Collins who departs for service in Viet Nam. Phillips, a native of Owen Sound, studied at Emmanuel College in Kitchener then Canadian Bible College in Regina, graduating in 1969. He and his wife move into a home at 5 Victoria Street this week after staying with friends.

Fire Chief Spots Burning Garbage Behind Georgetown Market Centre

The Fire Chief spotted a garbage fire behind stores at Georgetown Market Centre on a Tuesday evening while driving along the highway. He said the fire appeared set and warned that garbage left lying there invites such incidents. No buildings were damaged.

Vacationing Nassagaweya Reeve Dies of Heart Attack

Nassagaweya Township reeve William Hoey died of a heart attack while vacationing in Digby Nova Scotia at 52. He chaired Halton County’s board of health and served on roads and finance welfare and assessment committees. Hoey moved to Nassagaweya in 1957 and was survived by his wife and two daughters.

Day Camp Draws 185 Youths at Terra Cotta Conservation

YMCA sponsored day camp at Terra Cotta Conservation Park drew 185 campers across July with fare weeks themed Conservation, Pirates, Indians and Mad Week. Bus loads varied from 120 early to 65 later due to vacations. Leaders Corp training, led by Cindy Cooper, prepared Grade 6 to 8 youths to become future Y leaders with 12 counsellors assisting under Camp Director Mrs Donma Robbins.

Halton County seeks new medical officer of health

Halton County advertises for a new medical officer of health at a 17000 annual salary. Despite self employed doctors in Canada earning over 27000 in 1967 the county has received only a few applications. The vacancy occurs Aug 31 after Dr L M Stuart retires and a joint meeting Aug 12 will review applicants.

Car Demolished Lucky Escape In Esquesing Township

Edward Shubert 35 escaped injury when a car crashed down a steep hill and landed on his parked 1967 Rambler in Esquesing Township. Shubert had just moved from under the vehicle and was walking away. The other car, a 1969 Meteor driven by 19 year old Pierre Sylvester of Quebec, with passenger Mark Labelle, received minor injuries. Damage estimated at $2,000.

Building permits issued in Georgetown in July totalled 1.46 million

July permits in Georgetown totaled 1,460,761 with three nonresidential permits at 210,600. Economy Farms expansion on Todd Road accounted for 170,000, Irwin-Dorsey Publishers addition 5,600, and a 35,000 church hall behind Sacre Coeur on Guelph Street completed three residential permits. The remainder were residential.

Blaze Levels Cottage and Barn Near Georgetown

A Georgetown area family lost their rented cottage and an adjacent barn when fire engulfed the Stewarttown Sideroad property last Wednesday afternoon. The Duguays escaped with their two small children while a Red Cross relief effort provided temporary housing and clothing. Hay, farm equipment, and all belongings were destroyed with no damage estimate yet released.

Disputes Light Charge When Doesn’t Benefit

Esquesing council heard residents contend street light charges unfair when lights do not illuminate their homes. Bob McGowan and Elaine Sampson pressed the issue, backed by Glen Williams. Deputy Reeve Tom Hill argued benefits extend to all in the Glen. Reeve Currie said hydro planners would respond after this week’s meeting. Council also approved F Johnston’s vestibule rebuild at the Hollywood House in Norval despite it extending onto township property after objections from Dr Ken Marshall. Building permits totalled $275 918 for July.

Grimsby retiree Bert Lindsay turns cherrywood into sculpture

Bert Lindsay a retired Grimsby principal and artist uses local cherrywood to sculpt about 20 pieces. A first festival display winner with a Viking head, he plans more work for upcoming shows in Hespeler and Port Colborne while contemplating future Grimsby 102 Festival presence. He emphasizes conventional forms over "weird art" and notes most work comes from cherry trunks often burned by farmers.
