Last week the Herald War Victims Fund received 28.95 bringing the total to 1462.27. McNab Street Neighbourhood Club added 12.00 while Mrs. Alex Taylor saved pennies for 2.00. Mrs. K Preston added 2.45 to an 86.30 quilt sale and streamers on the England quilt raised 10.50.
The Georgetown Herald reports on the British War Victims Fund with donations and a quilt project. Mrs ER Preston sent pennant messages to England while a textile picnic planned at Glen Williams and Georgetown sets August 9. Mr and Mrs J D Kelly and Mrs Alex Taylor are noted donors with totals listed.
The Georgetown Baptist Church hosted the wedding of Miss Mary Pearl Bessey and Mr. Harry Speers on Thursday evening August 7. The bride wore a beige outfit with pink rosebud corsage. bridesmaid Christine Semple wore white organza. The couple, after a brief honeymoon, will go to Meota Saskatchewan before settling in Markham Ontario.
Mr and Mrs Jack T Armstrong and Mr and Mrs Floyd Hilts attended the Canadian Florists and Gardeners Association convention at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. Armstrong joined the school of floral designs while Hilts attended growers lectures.
The first annual Glen Williams and Georgetown Textile Picnic was held last Saturday at Barber's Beach with employees and officials from Glen Textile Industries, Brill Hosiery Mills, and Whiteley-Portit Co. Ltd taking part. A raffle for the Herald War Victims Fund raised $10.50. Glen Textiles beat Whiteley-Portit 28-9 in a semi final men's softball before a lunch break. Beaumont-Brill led 10-4 when the game was called. Beaumont-Brill defeated Glen Textiles 10-8 in girls softball. second game not played. Winners in the sports included Herb Hancock and Ken McQuarrie in the legged race. various children excelled in races and swimming events.
A wedding last Friday united Evelyn May Sanderson and George K Greensward at St George s Church of England with Rev W W G O Thompson officiating at 6 pm. The bride wore a powder blue lace dress and a corsage of Sweetheart roses. her sister Jean was bridesmaid while Lloyd Sanderson served as best man. A reception followed at the bride’s home, and the couple plan a northern honeymoon before settling in Brampton.
The Acton Chapter of I O D E held a social and business gathering at Mrs C V Williams home with Regent Mrs S Mackenzie presiding. Attendees welcomed Lakeside Chapter members, reports were presented on Navy League tag day Red Cross garden party booth and fall fair booth plans followed by contests and refreshments.
The August 9 wedding of Margaret Lois Davidson to Cecil Davidson took place at Sprucelawn, home of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Robinson, with Rev. S R Colebrook officiating. The bride wore dull powder crepe with white navy accessories and pink rosebuds. Elva Wiley was bridesmaid. John Davidson Jr. was best man. After a reception, the couple left for a Kawartha Lakes tour and will reside in Georgetown.

A tribute to an Arcadee organist who joined the Royal Air Force after relocating from Toronto. He trained in Canada, served with distinction in the RAF, earned his wings as a pilot, and inspired friends with his devotion to duty. Letters from Egypt recount experiences in Cairo as part of his wartime service.
At a Richmond Hill Presbytery meeting August 6 the call to Rev. C. C. Cochrane from Knox Georgetown and Limehouse was approved and accepted. Induction is scheduled for September 9 at 8 pm. Cochrane, Knox College 1940 graduate, has spent a year in the Northern Ontario mission at Geraldton, and hails from the Kingston district.
We the employees of the Glen Tex tile thank Mr Steinburg for the enjoyable picnic at Barber's Beach and Mr and Mrs Lederman and Mr Knoepfil for their kind help.
The week yielded mostly clear skies with a peak of 90 degrees. Temperatures ran 4.7 degrees cooler than the prior week and a light shower occurred on Monday. Local records show daily highs and lows for August 5 to August 11.
Captain A J Williams 38, a Winnipeg born flyer who served with Atfero and the Toronto Flying Club, was killed in a Moncton area plane crash. Radio operator Frank C Godfrey and navigator Sgt G A L Webby were involved with the fatal incident near the New Brunswick airport. Williams was also a renowned musician and band leader with ties to Toronto groups. He leaves a widow in Winnipeg.
