A southbound Northern Pacific freight train No. 57 was wrecked by a landslide a quarter mile south of Castle Rock. The engine and cars were derailed, 125 yards of track torn up, with no fatalities. Several injured, including a brakeman slightly burned and a man with a broken leg. wreck clearance expected in 48 hours.
Judge Robinson hears Captain Z. J. Hatch seek 10000 and J. A. Silsby seek 5000 for alleged damages from the Northern Pacific tunnel project on Seventh street and the church property at Main and Seventh. Allen Ayer and Ashton argue the city bears fault and the railroad’s under Seventh street right depends on city ordinance. The Hatch suit may trigger additional filings and Silsby’s outcome excites close scrutiny.
A St. Louis admirer recalls Congressmen John J. O'Neill delivering bright epigrams in a downtown hotel. He recounts a street encounter with a curious elder lady who asks about O'Neill's baby. O'Neill replies that age fades while the cradle remains filled.
Washington Dec 23 The full list of House committees as proposed by Speaker Crisp omits Mills from the most influential panels. Notable chairmen include Springer on Ways and Means and O Farrel on Elections and related fields.
Henry Labouchere recounts posing as a passport exchanger to create counts. He notes how many applicants sought titles after he offered a new passport that dubiously elevated their rank. The tale ends with a jab at those who later look down on him for granting noble status.

Reports from Rio Grande City say Captain Burke and nineteen troops from Fort Ringgold battled Garcia's bandits twice near the La Gruella crossing. Corporal Hstrom was killed and Lt. Hayes was wounded as the sixty bandits scattered. a planned sack of Camargo, Mexico, may have been foiled.
Bank clearances on Tuesday at Tacoma were 141904 dollars and Seattle 120868 dollars with balances of 25385 and 42920 dollars. Griggs & Heustis employ 600 on the Northern Pacific branch between Chehalis and South Bend for winter work. J J Hancock reports 2300 acres of potatoes yielding 14000 bushels, over 600 to the acre. Ninety seven divorces were granted in Tacoma this year with cruelty, desertion and abandonment as main causes. Tariffs on lumber and shingles open new eastern connections for Puget Sound markets. Dr Fred F Spaulding health officer of Seattle and Andrew F Burleigh of Seattle attend the Olympia hotel with James W Currie of Edmonds. F A Bailey of Seattle and North ern to succeed J O Phelps as assistant superintendent of Port Townsend Southern. Phelps to take duties at Seattle Northern in a few days. friends in Olympia regret his departure.
On Christmas night the Sunday school of the Methodist church will present a cantata of Santa Claus with a musical program. The children will then receive their Christmas gifts.
