Judicial ruling on Ohio and Mississippi Railroad case in Illinois
Judge O Melveny of the Second Circuit reviews the Marion county circuit decision against the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. The trustees for bondholders seek to restrain sale of mortgaged property while asserting liens remain valid and that certain mortgage provisions are void. The court denies the injunction and dismisses the bill, with potential appeal to the Supreme Court.

In New York on July 2 the remains of President Monroe were exhumed before Governor Wise and Virginia officers. The coffin was well preserved and moved to the Church of the Ascension. Public and shipyard flags were at half mast and minute guns rang until sunset as a long procession, escorted by regiments, passed Broad Street. Remains lay in state at Leitz Hall until tomorrow afternoon.

Bayard Taylor Sees Sparta and Taygetus in abrupt Greece
The author travels from Leondari toward Sparta across Taygetus and Manaelus, describing the frontier edge of Arcacaa, the water-shed between Alpheus and Eurstas, and the ancient theater near the Euronas plain. He observes rural improvement, cultivation, and lingering walls, with vivid early spring scenery and reflections on Spartan ruins.

National Extravagance and Anecdotes From The Era
A Schenectady editor notes a gale tipping a canal boat and a captain's crew overturning a barrel of brandy. A witty exchange about a wife follows. The piece attacks Buchanan era outlays, citing sums for general expenses and the post office, predicting larger deficits. Jamaica’s size and population are described, with emigration urged. Maryland rejects a Constitutional Convention, and quips on lightning rods and rods for mischief.
