A Massachusetts senator argues that fewer than a quarter of the state's minors who left school last year did so due to economic pressure. Forty percent left because they felt their studies failed to fit them for intended work. He contends education should be utilitarian but must also include poetry history other lands and religion to uplift and retain students.
Two Mill creek bridges on Catawba avenue are rebuilt with extra heavy oak flooring replacing worn planks. Bradley store remodeled and raised to street level nearing completion for Harris Bargain Store. Westermann warehouse finished behind Bryson-Snyder building with repainting and other improvements. Carpenters have found work in Old Fort this summer despite low business mood.
On Wednesday night the younger set enjoyed a camping trip and fish fry at Camp Allison in honor of the young ladies returning to college this month. Miss Florine Harris daughter of Mr and Mrs J R Harris of Old Fort married Raymond Padgett son of Mr and Mrs Gus Padgett on a Friday evening at the Harris home Rev J E Ingle Baptist pastor officiating They will reside in Selma North Carolina where Padgett works as an electrician
Richard Dix stars in Lovin the Ladies a comedy about an electrician who masquerades in high society and must choose among four women Lois Wilson Rita La Roy Virginia Sale and Renee Macready in a five cornered romantic farce.
A sweep of visits and departures fills Old Fort life as residents host relatives from Marion Asheville Canton and Charlotte. Miss Fannie Nichols leaves for nursing studies in Trenton New Jersey while many others, including Miss Myrtle Lytle and Miss Katherine Finch, return home from Charlotte and Asheville respectively. Local students, teachers, and families plan trips to Raleigh Greensboro Blowing Rock and Lake Tahoma with gatherings at Camp Allison and Lake Toxaway.
Mrs George Moore was a delightful hostess for the Woman's Club last Saturday at her Main street home. The program included discussions by Mrs J E Ingle Miss Mildred McDade and Miss Katheryn McCall with out of town guests Mrs A V Nolan of Marion and Mrs George B Strickland of Pine Level. President Mrs George Sandlin led the fall season gathering as refreshments were served during the social hour by the hostess and assistants Mary Louise Moore among them.
News of Miss Dorris Barnes of Jacksonville Florida wedding to Mr Clarence Mauney of Jacksonville and Old Fort has been received. Younger set enjoyed a picnic party at Lake Tahoma Monday night. The Pacific Ocean is made up of about 68 634 000 square miles.

Fire swept the main Camp Allison building Saturday night at about eleven. Campers had built a stove fire earlier, and neighbors awoke to find the structure enshrouded in flames. The property had recently been sold by Mrs. Coleman Allison to an Asheville man and was damaged.
