Old Fort Forms Two Glee Clubs For School Music

Miss Edith Rowe Grady piano teacher led voluntary singers to form two elementary and high school glee clubs in Old Fort. Twenty members each, meeting weekly to prepare for the county commencement program at East Marion. The effort aims to create a permanent school musical organization and improve daily chapel singing. Members listed include Billy Dalton through Cadell Camp with two soprano groups and notable illness recovery of Margaret Jordan. Visitors from Marion and Darlington noted.

Little Mary Jean Fisher Narrowly Escapes After Fall

Small daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry C Fisher fell from a moving sedan traveling about forty miles per hour and broke an arm. She was reported in town Monday morning with her usual happy smile.

Mrs Fisher Hosts Easter Cantata Social Evening

The Baptist choir met at the church for Easter Cantata practice with guests from Biltmore Church. Mrs Henry Fisher hosted a social hour at her home with a salad course after the rehearsal. Asheville visitors included E O Buckner 0 Wonder Mrs W J Barnard and Thelma Wilkinson. Others joined were Mr and Mrs L J Epley and their daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs Lee Jordan of Asheville. Additional visitors included I Geo Lee and Pearl Lee Gilliam of Asheville with Mr and Mrs John S Bradley. Mr and Mrs L D Greene were guests of Mrs Georgia Grant. Funeral of Mrs Journey In NC Ends Week of Sorrow

Mrs S F Mauney returned home from Statesville after visiting her sister Mrs Sam Journey who died at Davis Hospital after two weeks illness. She was the eldest of eleven children of Rev Frank Bradley of Gastonia and is survived by husband father five sisters and five brothers. Funeral was held Saturday March 15 with interment in Olin cemetery. Her son Francis accompanied her home from Old Fort Friday to attend the services.

Old Fort School Stages Unusual Music Program

A Thursday chapel program at Old Fort School showcased local talent with Gaston Rhinehardt and Charles Gregg on guitars, Ralph Gregg on violin, Woodrow Harris on harp, and singers Joe Lee Burgin and Merrill Kanipe. Gaston and Joe Lee surprised listeners with yodeling as visitors applauded the performance.

Call for Aid March 28 Parish Offering for Relief Fund

Old Fort ministers join County Relief Association in a Sunday March 28 offering to support welfare work for the poor. The committee urges all residents to attend church and contribute to the fund for county wide organized charity.

Services for the week begin Sunday March 28 at Old Fort include Sabbath School Children’s Worship at 11 a.m. Christian Endeavor at 6 45 p.m. Public Worship at 7 30 p.m. Prayer Meeting Wednesday at 7 30 p.m. An offering at the Sunday service aids the McDowell County Relief Association. A flurry of visits and hospitality fills Old Fort as residents host friends and relatives from Asheville Marion Statesville Lenoir Morganton and Raleigh. Eastern Star Officers Installed at Old Fort Chapter

The Old Fort Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star held a March 17 meeting and installed officers for the year. Names include Mrs. Don Gosorn as Worthy Matron and J. E. Melton as Worthy Patron, with several other elected officers and staff. Delicious St. Patrick's Day color scheme refreshments followed.

Marion salesman buys Nesbitt stock to sell in two days

J L Nichols of Marion purchased the bankrupt stock of J N Nesbitt and Company of Old Fort on Thursday at 11 am. He opened the sale Friday at 9 am and by Saturday 5 pm the entire stock and fixtures, priced at one quarter of former value, had sold. Inventory exceeded two thousand dollars.

Miss Ruth Moody hosted a birthday party at Old Fort, Rt. 1, on Saturday afternoon.
