North Carolina libraries grow but remain understocked

The Library Commission notes progress with seventy four tax supported and club run libraries serving nearly a million people. Charlotte Head Librarian records 62 633 volumes with Asheville at 25 883. Most libraries lack Southern history works but efforts at Chapel Hill aim to build a premier Southern collection.

Camp Allison Week End Party Draws Local Youth

A crowd of boys and girls from Old Fort Black Mountain and Biltmore enjoyed hospitality at Camp Allison in Asheville hosted by Mrs. James. Attendees included Alberta Padgett Bonnie Ruth Melton Helen Padgett Margaret Roberts Helen Harris Bessie Morgan Helen Greene Marie Samms Capt Chas Fisher Pilot Kanipe Maur ice Flemming Bebe Manney Hawkshaw Rock Samp Grant Bud Hennessee Ossie Tate and others. The event ended with all having an enjoyable time.

Meeting of the Junior B Y P U at Mrs Allison home

The Junior B Y P U gathered with Mrs Ben Allison on Friday evening for a social meeting. Nineteen members attended a Bible contest and games were enjoyed. Hot chocolate and cakes were served as leaders described social gatherings building interest and drawing new and absent members to the society.

Mrs Lackey Hosts Liberal Sewing Society Meeting

The Liberal Sewing Society met at Mrs J L Lackey's home Friday for business and social time. Charter members named include Tate Allison Steppe Walden Paul Allison Lackey and Hensleys. Francis Mauney hosted a small gathering with dancing and refreshments.

Mrs Finch Celebrates Long Life At 90 In Old Fort

Mrs James Finch marked her 90th birthday with family and friends at her Old Fort home. Born in 1840 near Shelby she recalled five wars and Sherman’s raid while living two miles from Old Fort. Now widowed since 1905 she attributes her health to habits outdoors and climate.

Forgers on the Loose in Old Fort Visit

Two men named John Robert Ellis and James Alvin Ellis, from Statesville, spent a week in Old Fort and cashed forged checks totaling about 100 dollars before fleeing on Saturday evening. They claimed interest in leasing a site west of town to build a lunch room and auto accessory store. Checks were cashed at Noblett, Bryson-Snyder and Harris on the same night they were forged. Deputies searched for the pair but found no clue. The elder man had tattooed hands with a girl's face and a bird. the younger had many freckles.

The trustee reoffers at public auction on February 7 1930 at 12 noon at the Marion courthouse door the Old Fort land West of Old Fort Township beginning on a highway line 75 feet fronting Central Highway.
