Official word states 280000 men will be called in June with reports due June 24. Oklahoma plans to add about 4000 more as quotas depend on available camp space and future troop movements. Adjutant says roughly 3800 may be called, with many registrants June 5 unlikely to be included.
Washington May 4 Officers of the signal corps in charge of aircraft contracts were questioned before Charles E Hughes and Honed today. Attorney General and assistant Attorney General person participated. Hughes said future work would rely on witnesses and records from war department and aircraft board. Officials noted public interest waned but production continued with motors meeting shipping space. An inspection trip to aircraft manufacturing plants will be conducted by the Senate military subcommittee studying the airplane situation.
Grace Lusk, convicted slayer of Mrs. Mary Newman Roberts in Waunkee, Wis, is in serious condition. Her lawyers plan one more appeal to have her declared insane and moved to an asylum rather than prison, with potential transfer back if she recovers.
About 1,800 shopworkers on Rock Island went on strike affecting Silvis and Moline area shops. NEA reports workers claim wage and condition disputes, with representatives sent to investigate by Rock Island officials and Silvis shops. Soissons is reported to have been in flames Wednesday.
British casualties for May total 166000 with 1538 officers killed or died of wounds 20518 wounded or missing officers 6182 and 56566 other ranks. Weekly reports show heavy fighting since the German offensive began in March and April lists reflect rising totals from early May.
American aviators shot down another German airplane today on the front northwest of Toul. The Hun plane fell behind American lines as fighting continued in the area with the American Army maintaining pressure on the German position.
