In New York in May H P Metman aged 59 canal boat captain was shot and killed by Pratt Taylor a 20 year old man in city waters authorities said. The incident occurred during routine duties on the canal boat with no further details released.
Washington May 2 Women and girls may be used for light farm work under the department of agriculture plan for a volunteer work army for the harvest season. They would feed and care for harvest hands or extra labor and can and dry surplus perishable products. The department machinery now operates in forty states and expects to enroll many retired farmers for active work in the emergency. Organizers have been named for each state county and community.
A Budapest telegraph states Count Andrassy is appointed premier of Hungary after the May 23 resignation of Count Stephen Tisza. The Volks Zeitung notes confirmation doubts, with Tisza's franchise reforms blamed for the rift. Andrassy, long an opposition leader, is described as liberal and eastward-leaning.
