Oklahoma's twenty second legislature closed after a noisy outburst over a veterans bonus bill. The adjournment was very quiet despite the heated days as both houses passed bonus measures to create campaign voting records for re election.
The house and senate clashed over a $100 million bonus plan as the senate dumped the proposal in a dramatic move. The tactic aimed to provoke a public display and left the house startled and facing a heated end to the session.
Oklahoma’s highest paid, highest spending legislature in history adjourned after 144 days opening January 4. It spent about 142.5 million dollars with drivers license fees rising to 1.50, pay raises for elected and county officials, 40 hour Capitol week, and a new speed limit code taking effect August 25 setting 65 mph day 55 mph night for cars and scaled truck limits.

Paris May 28 U P The three western powers presented to Russia a plan for a new western German state by allowing eastern Germany to join. The western counter proposal to Russia's call for a return to Potsdam was given to Soviet Foreign Minister Vishinsky at the sixth meeting of the council of foreign ministers. It was approved by Dean Acheson Ernest Bevin and Robert Schuman at a private two hour meeting before the four power session. The western plan rejects four power military control and aims to use the Bonn drafted constitution as a basis for German unity while promising liberties not yet granted in the Soviet sphere.
The American Red Cross will spend 150000 to aid tornado and flood victims in Oklahoma. Max W. Rote Jr., director of the state disaster headquarters, estimates 920 families in 23 counties were affected and will need assistance.
Two blond gunmen robbed a 70 year old night clerk at the Lamar hotel 421 N Broadway early Saturday and escaped on a motorcycle after cutting telephone wires. They ransacked drawers, took 24 dollars from the clerk and 20 from another clerk and wiped fingerprints. Hotel guest Stella Crow saw a motorcycle headed north on Broadway.
Oklahoma rainfall continued into the weekend with Newkirk recording 2.38 inches Friday into Saturday. Official C P Dewey noted no road closures or severe damage to the wheat crop. Forecasts call for more scattered thunderstorms statewide with Oklahoma City area expecting showers Sunday afternoon and night and highs near 88.
Phillips Petroleum Co. announces Stanley Learned has been elected a director and member of the executive committee by the board in Bartlesville. President K S Adams said the action reflects the company’s leadership plans.

WKY-TV aired its first live sports broadcast from the Coliseum Friday night using the mobile unit. Viewers across the city reported clear picture and sound as cameras captured the wrestling matches. The signal traveled via microwave to the Apco tower, Municipal auditorium, and Britton road transmitter for airing.
Charles Ryan of Hatch New Mexico and Alice Texas were acquitted of murder after a district court jury found self defense. The jury deliberated 23 minutes before reaching the verdict regarding the slaying of M. E. Doc Ness, a renowned treasure hunter and prospector.
A Teepee Drilling No. 1 Warner wildcat near a Shell and Magnolia lease shot Friday and flowed oil briefly before a stuck gate valve and bridged line halted flow. Attempts to remove the swab and regain production continued as mud and drilling water carried oil. The well reached Hunton lime at depth but failed to produce after the shot and workflows.
In Baltimore on May 28 Emotional Disturbance won the eighteenth Johns Hopkins turtle derby at the tennis court, covering 19 feet in 70 seconds to take the Colostomy cup for owner-trainer Dr. Esther Richards associate professor of psychiatry at Hopkins. The record stood at 38 and 2 5 seconds, and a bystander admitted planning to fix the race with a hot shell.
The 1949 graduation tariff shows high school costs from about 40 to over 100 dollars for clothing, dues, trips, and events. Boys spent more on suits and prom outfits while girls crafted gowns at home, with specifics including a 65 dollar suit and a 25 dollar prom dress. Senior day activities cost 2 dollars. choir and honor society banquets added small charges as part of the total.
Hurley Slitt’s second surrender attempt led to arraignment on a single count of assault with intent to kill after a Thursday shooting in the 600 block South Pennsylvania that wounded Homer Byford. Payne a bootlegger testified paying Briggs 18400 over years for liquor and gambling protection while other witnesses described Briggs enforcement and defenses framed by his counsel.
In a May letter to Oklahoma Governor Turner, President Truman agreed to dissolve the National Truman-Barkley club. He praised the group’s 1948 campaign work but said separate political committees are needed for campaigns to avoid diversions of effort and divided loyalty.
