New York May 25 The Dun and Bradstreet wholesale food price index rose to 5.74 from 5.66, marking the sharpest weekly gain since mid February though the index remains 17.3 percent below its year ago level. The index covers wholesale cost of a pound each of 31 widely used foods with 13 commodities advancing including wheat corn rye oats hams bellies cheese coffee eggs potatoes steers hogs and lamb. Cottonseed oil beans and peas were the only items to decline.

Nurse shoots infant son then kills self in Louisiana
In Alexandria on May 25 a 25 year old registered nurse Mrs R K Parker Jr shot her two year old son Robert with a .22 pistol then turned the weapon on herself. She and the toddler were said to be in critical condition but expected to recover. The husband, a postman, was detained for questioning and had left for work minutes before the incident.
