Washington May 24 The house ways and means committee approved an exception in the case of gold and bullion to the war revenue bill. The measure would place a 1 percent tax on all gold imports since the war started but is now relieved of further objections from treasury officials. The original proposal estimated the gold value at over 1 billion dollars.
Chicago dispatch reports bandmaster Sousa expected to join the Navy training station as musical director. A telegram from John Allen Carpenter notes plans to be finalized with a letter to follow, detailing the collaboration amid a patriotic mood and emboldened music at the camp.
