In Berlin twelve thousand striking railway workers clashed with young communist strike breakers across nearly a dozen elevated stations. Violent scenes injured hundreds, halted freight to western Berlin, and risked a return to wartime austerity. U S troops contemplated aiding local police if needed.
Oklahoma City residents joined poppy card sales by disabled veterans in hospitals. The artificial red flowers are sold through American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries to aid poppy-makers and other veterans in need.
U.S. Weather Bureau reports cooler tonight with 58 degrees low. Sunday partly cloudy with little temperature change. Highs in the 70s. State forecasts cooler conditions tonight and Sunday, eastern area fair, Panhandle lows 40s to 50s, Sunday highs in the 70s.
Five prominent Hiawatha residents died when a plane crashed five miles northwest of Burr Oak, Kansas. The victims included For rest Gore airport manager and pilot, William Clement chamber of commerce president, Mark E. Scarbrough city editor, Dr Paul Brown county coroner, and C C Jarvis auto dealer. The group had left to attend a U S 36 Highway association meeting in St Francis. The crash site was heard as troubled by nearby farmers moments before the wreck.
Collinsville on May 21 a Collie Shepherd dog kept at the edge of a water filled pit led rescuers to the body of Edgar Jennings Bryan a 48 year old Collinsville farmer. Bryan fell into the pit during an epileptic seizure after lunch with a friend. Police chief Ray Davis directed the rescue that recovered the body two hours after grappling began. Tulsa county investigator Brick Fowler ruled the death accidental drowning.
Carmel, Calif. Ed ward Kuster will likely not schedule the play By Candlelight again after his Golden Bough theater burned early Saturday. The fire of undetermined origin destroyed the theater, which had slated the same play for next Monday. No damage estimate was available.
The Allis Chalmers Co. became the ninth manufacturer to obtain a court order for removal of parts from the Bendix aviation plant in South Bend Indiana. Attorney George N. Beamer secured a replevin writ in circuit court and Sheriff Stephen C. Hipsak was directed to serve it on the striking union and Bendix representatives. Removal of parts was not expected before Monday.
Brother William J. Hagerty S J aged 36 assistant bursar at Loyola College died here Friday night in Baltimore.
Ford Motor Co accuses United Auto Workers CIO of using every device to prolong a strike that has idled 106,000 workers. John S. Bugas, Ford industrial relations director, urged talks begin in peace and not war, noting Ford refuses to start negotiations until the dispute is settled.
Durant Bryan county educators pursue graduate degrees at OU through adult education. Ten teachers and a Mead high school principal travel 140 miles each Saturday to Norman for two course blocks, totaling four graduate hours. Leaders include Lola Pollan who leaves at 3:30 a.m. for the early class.
Gov. Turner halted a prior constable’s case stemming from a tavern assault involving Sgt. Kirby L. Quinn and two soldiers. The governor vacated Quinn’s conviction, clearing the way for a air corps cadet appointment while George faces a new assault with a dangerous weapon conviction and pending sentencing.
Tornadic winds Friday night in northwestern Oklahoma left three dead including 12 year old Helen Wilson of Geary and 55 year old Charlie Sykes of Yewed. Six injured as homes farms and businesses were damaged or overturned. Wheat fields flattened and hail accompanied the storm sweeping from the western to eastern parts of the state.
United Press reports the Weather Bureau in Washington says a high pressure system building over the Pacific may halt a series of tornadoes that hit the west and southwest this week. Forecasters caution conditions remain unstable over the Mississippi Valley but expect the high to sweep inland and end the twister plague by Sunday.
Reports describe heavy storms hitting communities near Cherokee with widespread damage. Sykes slept inside a grain elevator in Yewed when the powerful wind fragmented the structure, leaving felled trees and debris across both commercial and residential districts. Further details follow on page 2.
Rosser Texas flooding from the Trinity river breached levees and flooded 11000 acres. U S Army engineers noted dikes collapse. Levees at Rosser stand 37 feet high, river rose to 38 feet after midnight, with guards and patrols on scene. No human life was threatened.
Milan dispatch reports Communist action squads raided hit spots in the Po valley on Saturday trying to break a back to work movement in an agriculture strike that left about one million farmhands idle. Clashes occurred at a dozen points in Milan province and Milan had a two hour general strike only 40 percent effective. Police described the raids as aiming to terrorize.
Floyd Jones, farmer five miles west of Thomas, reports Friday night wind lashed Custer county, damaging 25 homes and businesses and injuring one man. A chicken house blew away, sirens sounded, 1220 residents sought shelter as high school commencement paused. Brown's IGA store suffered the heaviest damage in the business district.
Oklahoma reels from seven days of continuous rain as the Cimarron overflows near Coyle threatening new floods. Washita rises flood Lindsay, Kingfisher, and areas around Chickasha, Guthrie, and Perkins. State rainfall ranges with Geary drenching over three inches and Okardie about four inches while officials warn of rising creeks and road closures.
Southern Baptists at Municipal auditorium unanimously approved expanding north and westward to spread the gospel. The resolution, led by Dr. T. C. Gardner, warns against formal union with other bodies and stresses proceeding without harming other churches while resisting any compromise in doctrine. The move reflects postwar population shifts and broader missionary scope.
Troy Adams, owner of ABC cleaners at 2802 S Agnew, reports repeated burglaries this week. Thieves shattered the south window three times, stealing $15.55, then $10, and $5.50 from the cash register. Adams fears the break-ins may become habitual.
Thousands of Oklahoma children and residents attended a parade and preview at Crippled Children's hospital for Lincoln park's new baby elephant, successor to Luna. The 54 inch tall, 1000 pound calf will be named at the zoo amphitheater after a midday parade route through downtown.
