Government commission today formally accepted Wt Humphrey's resignation as chairman of the corporation. An appointment of Humphrey's successor was announced. Humphrey said he would return to Nowata to resume the practice of law.
The Oklahoma High School annual, a 224 page publication, will leave the press May 25. Nine departments are represented with four pages of cartoons. The cover shows an Oklahoma rose in violet tones, and headings for various sections are by Thelma Davis and Edith Grassem with art supervision by George Clark and Arnold Gillespie.
Formal opening today at Hartwell Jewelry Company 214 West Main Street features musical programs and flower favors. Afternoon session runs from 1 to 5 pm with an evening program 7 to 9 pm. Carnations distributed to all attendees amid vine adorned displays and attractive windows.
Layton and Smith of Oklahoma City secured the contract from the state board of public affairs to prepare plans for rebuilding Witkin hall at the re created University Preparatory School in Tonkawa, destroyed by fire about three years ago. The funding was stated as available for the reconstruction project. In other news a race tension case arose as Sam Andrews, a negro teacher in Jones, was accused of whipping a pupil. Marie Jackson, a 13 year old, filed with county attorney O A Cargill. A warrant for Andrews was issued in the justice court of TF Donnell.
May 17 Washington report announces Assistant Secretary Benedict Crowell will head a party of military and civilian aviation experts sailing May 24 from New York to Europe to explore civilian aviation use. Secretary Baker confirms the voyage aboard Mount Vernon. Union of Presbyterian Churches favored in New Orleans meeting.
Detective John Mubatka arrived in Oklahoma City with Stewart White and two others linked to stolen securities from the Hines Oil Gas company. White confessed involvement with cab drivers James Red Lemmon and Tarry Meyers as alleged co-conspirators. White attempted to buy a car with a $1000 check, was arrested after a phone call to the auto firm, and photos and fingerprints were taken by Bertillon staff. The case will be referred to the county for action.
WEW announces new summer ice rates with 60 cents per hundred pounds, up ten cents from last season, and 100 pound enupon books at $5, up 10 cents from $4.90. President Carl S. Glitsch cites a daily consumer impact of about a cent and a quarter. Delivery drivers gain 20 cent commissions, and wholesale 10 cents per ton.
Washington May 17 General March chief of staff of the army announced that wartime transport experience disproves 1918 invasion estimates. Germany could not land 347000 in sixteen days, France 44000, Australia 18000, Japan 24000, under routes used.
The father of Mrs. Frank Harper of Wh2 West Thirty that street and Claire Prone, formerly a reporter for the Times stall, was killed in Toronto Canada when he fell from a window in his apartment while watching a parade of the Fifteenth battalion. The dispatch from Toronto says he lost his balance and died instantly.
United States Judge Augustus No Hand denied motions to dismiss a suit brought by the Tarot Holtman Brewing company. The action seeks to reinstate federal officials from enforcing prohibition laws and restricts their duties. The case, filed in New York, centers on government authority and regulatory enforcement.
Washington May 17 Democratic members of the new House smoothed out earlier differences and rallied to Champ Clark for Democratic House leader. A compromise plan created a committee to study a legislative steering group. Saunders of Louisiana offered the resolution for committee appointment, carried unanimously as Clark supporters backed the plan. Clarke was conference chairman with Ashbrook of Ohio as secretary.
Allied naval forces landed at Smyrna on Wednesday as advices from the Near East report military moves ahead of any peace with Turkey. All strategic points at Smyrna were taken by order of the peace conference as a precautionary measure to maintain order.
The NC-4, led by Lieut Commander Albert C Read, landed at Horta Azores after a 15 hour 13 minute flight from Trepassey Bay Newfoundland, covering about 1200 miles. Earlier reports noted NC-1 veered off course and NC-3 was lost in fog. weather around the Azores remained unsatisfactory with mist and squalls.
City building department reports total building permits to date noon 2001 rising with several new projects. Oklahoma leader notes a brick and concrete building at 17 2 West Third Street costing 5000. A permit for 14 West Tenth Street indicates a SLADD project. West Investment Co plans a residence at KOM West Fifteenth Street costing 2000. M Ker gon to add to 2409 Classen Boulevard for 5400.
