Four northwest city homes were ransacked Friday night with only small losses reported. Victims Mrs. Earl L. Mowery and R. W. Ward along with Leo Vance and Mrs. Georgie Ann Blessing described interiors emptied and scattered. Losses totaled about $102 plus a camera and minor items. Detectives Hilton Geer and Carl Stewart investigated.
A would be burglar in the NE 2 block was spotted by a 17 year old neighbor as he prepared to enter a rear window. The youth tackled the thief with a baseball bat but his mother intervened grabbing the bat amid a dispute over handling the incident. The suspect vanished after the confrontation.
Belgrade dispatch reports Novo Mesto district court in Slovenia convicting four Roman Catholic nuns on wartime spying charges. They receive prison terms of two to four years. Borba disclosed the trial, saying the nuns supplied information to priests who relayed it to Italian occupation officials about Yugoslav partisan unit activities.
El Reno city officials ordered a 30 day dog quarantine after two local children were bitten by a dog known to have rabies. The dog died four days later after showing rabies symptoms. Police were instructed to shoot stray dogs without vaccination tags. Both children are under physician care receiving anti rabies treatment.
Police Saturday detained a 62 year old man sought by local insurance adjusters. He is to be questioned about several recent jewelry thefts, police records disclose no such thefts lately.

A Greyhound bus traveling from El Paso to Dallas overturned on a slick curve near an underpass on highway 80 west of Loraine Texas. One passenger, T. M. Harris aged 51 from Bartlesville Oklahoma, died. Thirty four others were injured, many in critical condition. The driver A L Logan of Pecos Texas was uninjured. The bus carried about 39 passengers. Injured waited about 30 minutes for ambulances as responders arrived. A rainstorm was underway at the time of the crash.
In New York on May 7 a man broke into the Riverdale Bronx home of Mrs.Florence E. Willys widow of auto maker John N.Willys and stole 98600 in cash before being arrested Richard Strack Amsterdam NY held on burglary charges police said the cash was found in a second floor dressing room drawer and an alarm led to the capture.
Oklahoma Education Association board of directors will plan how to push stymied school legislation through the legislature at Huckins hotel on Wednesday at 10 30 am. State manager Ferman Phillips says the group will seek a path to enact laws benefiting pupils and teachers.
New York May 7 Macy's department store, the world’s largest, averted a threatened strike after a 12 hour negotiation. The Independent Department Store Union said the tentative contract provides a $2 across the board wage increase for 7,500 workers and awaits a membership vote for final approval.
In Turin on Friday more than 300,000 mourners filled the streets for a mass funeral honoring Italy's champion soccer team among 31 victims of a plane crash returning from a match. The coach, manager, three sportswriters and the crew also perished. Maurilio Cardinal Fossati officiated.
A dinner launching the Negro YMCA YWCA campaign for 30000 will be held at 7 p m Monday in the dining room of Douglass high school. About 160 leaders are expected. Charles W Anderson Jr will speak as the first black Kentucky legislator. Funds will go to build a branch YMCA costing 250000 to 350000. The Stiles street YWCA remodeling and Hi Y Gra Y offices are planned. Moon is campaign chairman. Evelyn Pittman singers and Mrs Breaux will lead musical program.
The American Legion executive committee urged Congress to return Mexican battle flags captured in 1847. The resolution says the trophies have no significance to Americans and would express hemispheric goodwill. Forty two flags are kept at West Point and in Washington, DC.
W. C. White, 38, a wholesale beer distributor from Oklahoma City, was shot in the right groin while dining at a Konawa cafe. Harve A. Lowery demonstrated a .45 pistol, removed the clip, and pulled the trigger, claiming the shot was accidental. White is listed in fair condition at Valley View hospital.
Matson Navigation Co halted freighter sailings to Hawaii Friday due to the CIO stevedore strike. The action disrupts cargo service and affects shipments to the islands. Prime entities include Matson Navigation Co and CIO. The report notes transport disruption without specifying ship names or dates beyond May.
Heavy rains flood the Wheat Belt isolating Lubbock and Sundown with high water in the business districts. A tornado devastated Sundown injuring and killing multiple residents as rescue crews searched wreckage and boats aided operations. Detroit May 7 A peace move in the Ford strike was proposed by Dearborn Mayor Orville L Hubbard. He invited Ford and CIO UAW officials to meet at his office next Thursday for a supreme civic effort to end the walkout. Ford plants idle since noon Thursday include Rouge and Lincoln Mercury. The UAW also reported a speed up charge at a General Motors plant in Flint where a unit voted 516 to 17 to strike subject to international approval. A Detroit union said plant level settlement is possible. Suppliers feel a pinch as the strike enters its third day.
A. F. Blackshere, a young scoutcar officer, dodged a speeding limousine at SW 13 and Agnew firing a warning shot and later pursuing the car through Stockyards City at 60 mph. He believes he may have hit the vehicle while also noting a separate incident where a bullet shattered a bedroom wall in the Lyle residence.
Western Oklahoma faced heavy downpours with Fairview Major county reporting seven inches unofficially. Four state highways closed SH 34 SH 8 SH 41 and SH 47 ferries on the South Canadian river halted. Officials say wheat not heavily harmed though rains continue.
Friedrich Hersen aged 34, a trapeze performer with Ringling Brothers Barnum Bailey, plunged 40 feet to the ground during a Madison Square Garden show before 15 000 spectators. He was reported in fair condition in hospital after the fall while his wife assisted during the act. The accident occurred two days before the circus leaves on its annual road tour.
A 10 month old Vineland New Jersey baby had an open safety pin lodged in the wind pipe. Surgeons at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia guided the pin into the stomach before closing it. Dr. Louis H Clark and Dr. John J O Keefe performed the procedure using fluoroscope and bronchoscopic tools. The child, son of Mrs Essie Mae Cannon, recovered with no ill effects, doctors said.
Secretary of Agriculture Brannan will visit Gov. Turner at Turner's ranch near Sulphur on Sunday afternoon and accompany the governor to Stillwater and Tulsa Monday. Turner will fly to Lubbock Sunday to meet Brannan and escort him to the ranch. They will inspect Oklahoma A&M College at Stillwater and Brannan will speak at the Jefferson Jackson Democratic dinner in Tulsa Monday night.
The body of John Romanowski, 55, was recovered from a shaft in Pittston after a rockfall trapped him during morning operations. He was found about a half hour before midnight, nearly 12 hours after the incident that occurred at the mines operated by Barney Guzior.
In Dayton Ohio a self styled right wing faction of the CIO United Electrical Workers convened to nominate candidates to oust UE officers. Delegates from seven states and Canada gather at Delco local 1755 hall for a two day session to form a national slate and oppose the left wing. James B Carey, former UE president, expected to attend as part of the drive to regain leadership.
Gulfstream Park president James Donn was freed without bond after a warrant charged embezzlement of 20000 dollars. The warrant, filed by former Gulfstream racing director James L. Clifford, alleges Donn converted 10000 for his own use. No trial date is set. Donn calls the charge unfounded and aimed at embarrassing him.
In Bucharest on May 7, the Romanian supreme military court confirmed life terms for Peasant party leaders Juliu Maniu and Ion Mihalache on charges of high treason and sabotage. The court also rejected 13 appeals for crimes against the state, with defendants facing two years to life. Attornies said they will seek final appeals to the republic's supreme court, though such efforts are seen as unlikely to succeed.
Fourteen year old Angie Pappan, seriously ill with a rheumatic fever like illness, met Shirley Temple at her Pasadena home. The visit uplifted the girl who had long admired the star and she called the moment wonderful after chatting for about an hour.
