The Big Four nations announced that the Berlin blockade would end on May 12 and that a foreign ministers conference on Germany would be held in Paris on May 23. Moscow reportedly pressed for a German plebiscite and withdrawal of troops, signaling shifts in the Cold War stance.
Three western reporters William Hamsher Allyn Baum and Richard Weil were detained by Soviet guards while trying to beat the Berlin blockade’s lifting. They drove from Berlin toward Helmstedt in Hamsher's car and were released after being stopped near the city boundary.

Tom Williams said the 2,100 employees in the plant virtually ceased operations while talks on a new contract continued for two months. The union seeks higher wages, a 35 hour week, and revisions to the standard system amid alleged business condition concerns.
Senate appropriations chairman Raymond Gary and House chairman Paul Harkey said a $500 annual teacher pay raise can be funded within the next two years budget. They claimed $3 million for public buildings and $3.5 million for higher learning would offset veteran tuition losses, with funds for mental institutions and a $147 million revenue forecast. They urged Governor Turner to back a job classification plan to save about $2 million in the second year. The school aid measure moved further in the Senate amid debate.
Carl Lester Riley pleaded guilty before U S commissioner to stealing money from letters and discarding them in a storm sewer. Decoy letters carried money were used. all 12 letters recovered from a storm sewer with $48 found. Riley said he has taken 65 to 70 letters since January 1 totaling about $225. He will be charged by information and face Judge Broaddus in federal district court. He served as a temporary substitute letter carrier out of the main post office since Sept 10, 1948.
John T. Quinn, 78, longtime Sparks resident in Lincoln county, died Wednesday from complications after a fall three months ago. Services will be at 2 p m Friday at Parks funeral home in Prague. He was an Oklahoma farmer and died following a broken hip.
Gov. Turner's 35 million Oklahoma City Tulsa toll road loan was withdrawn from RFC active files, delaying federal consideration. RFC chairman Harley Hise said funds above 25 million were unlikely, leaving a gap of about 10 million for construction costs. Rep. Tom Steed called the move a gimmick and a dead issue for opponents in Lincoln and Creek counties.
Spokesmen for the Foreign Missions Conference of North America urge continued non intervention by the State Department toward China. Representing about 29 million Protestant members across 26 denominations they oppose further military aid to China and argue no viable path for peaceful political change exists.
The 1949 Oklahoma legislature approved 1,833,160 for free textbooks, forecast to save about 56 dollars for parents with children in first through eighth grade. Four masked men robbed two bank officials just before noon Thursday in Cleveland, escaping with about 25000 dollars. Victims were Anton Bigza a 62 year old teller and George Ziemba a 65 year old vice president of Lincoln Heights Savings and Son Co. The robbers used two cars and abandoned one at the scene, ramming the curb with their getaway vehicles.
Conda Rogers, 32, said a bandaged man pretending to be a thirsty patient lured him to a city hospital rear for a robbery. The bandaged man flashed a gun, took $190 and Rogers’s car keys, then fled toward an alley. the keys were later sought.

Paul Russell Johnson, 28, told of his five hour struggle to escape as Scoutcar patrolman A F Black forced entry into a second floor bowling alley at 413 Broadway. Johnson, a former convict, said it was terrible and he felt trapped while his pistol was drawn.
