Three boys aged 11 to 13 were found to have stolen seven cars in the past week and a half. Juvenile detectives report “at least a dozen” more vehicles missing, but all recovered after brief reprimands.
In St Paul Minnesota on March 23 a local lawyer baked a cake in a kitchen to prove a gas stove worked. Judge Royden Dane observed and will issue a verdict later after the baking trial overseen by Mrs. Charles Finck.
Contracts totaling nearly 400000 were awarded for an 87-room old people hotel and a combined church school in Oklahoma City. Dennehy Construction Co. won the hotel bid at 301858, while John B. Martin Construction Co. secured 76985 for a four room parochial school and auditorium to be used as Christ the King Church. Work starts within 30 days with Rev. Charles Buswell as pastor. the facility will be steel reinforced concrete and brick and may be operated by monks or nuns. The project serves West Nichols Hills residents after months of fundraising and planning.
Pioneer Oklahoma City columnist Walt Mills died at his home 1008 NW 25 at 7 20 am Wednesday after years of ill health. Mills 69 wrote light verse and comment for the Oklahoma City Times and Oklahoma News and later for several state papers. His son Ed works as a copyreader for the Gary Post-Tribune. Mills served in the Spanish American War and Philippine insurgency, later joining the American constabulary in Manila. He began in printing before moving into editing under Edgar Watson Howe.

Benjamin Cain, owner of a trucking line, sues for 12,831.67 in income and gift tax refunds. He says 1943 rewards to A. B. Hardy and R. J. Reed, totaling 14,557 in business interests, should be fully deductible, contesting gift tax and income tax assessments and claiming no timely refund.
W A Brooks, trustee in bankruptcy of General Beverage Co, requests court permission to borrow 885.25 to cover 1949 tag fees on 18 trucks. Great Southern Life Insurance Co, plus City National Bank and Citizens State Bank of Oklahoma City, claim first mortgages on the fleet and may advance the money at 6 percent if approved.
Manila march 23 reports charges that Moro war damage claimants in the southern Philippines were defrauded prompting the U S Philippine war damage commission to suspend payments. Postmasters treasurers and others in Lanao and Cotabato provinces were accused of illegal mail openings forged checks delivering checks to unauthorized persons and taking excessive cashing fees.

Durant principal chief Harry J. W. Belvin said an 8.5 million dollar allotment for the purchase of the Choctaw Chickasaw coal and asphalt lands was included in the deficiency appropriation bill by a Senate subcommittee. Belvin, back from Washington, reported confidence from Sens Kerr and Thomas and the state delegation that the appropriation would pass in a few days.
Henryetta Oklahoma reports a local pastor saw attendance rise by 50 percent after advertising an evangelist would name four people going to hell. Rev Oscar H Bolen of Assembly of God said 300 attended Sunday night versus the usual 200. Names listed were Mock titles rather than real individuals.
Pension backers pushed for quick passage of a large veterans pension bill in the House. A roll call vote followed tentative support to kill the measure earlier, with Rankin steering a plan to limit eligibility to World War I veterans and retire WWII provisions. A substitute by Huber would restrict benefits to World War I veterans and add need-based eligibility, with possible raises for certain disability payments.
Tecumseh woke to a blast at Girls Town near the State Industrial School for Girls causing $20,000 in damage. An underground steam tunnel blamed for the 7 am explosion. five additional shocks felt but officials could not confirm their cause. Mrs Bertha Morgan narrowly escaped injury as the storage building collapsed. no fire or injuries beyond that.
The Canadian government unveils drastic tax cuts and expanded exemptions to 750,000 taxpayers. A 32 percent income tax cut, exemptions raised to 1000 for singles and 2000 for married couples plus child allowances, plus relief on small businesses, removes price controls and eases import rules. Finance Minister Abbott says prosperity continues and prices recede. Prime Minister St Laurent's Liberal majority seeks a general election framed by tax relief. The plan would cut national revenue by about 270 million and leave a projected fiscal year surplus of 87 million. A single man on 3000 income would drop from 420 to 320 tax.
Victim Keasling of 319 NW 5 fought back when a gunman and two accomplices entered his tavern. The assailant Roy Goad, 38, held a pistol in his stomach and was beaten after resisting, receiving a bullet wound to the toe. Goad, with a long crime record, was jailed. Keasling and companions were unharmed.
Iris Hall, a former Oklahoma school for the deaf teacher from Sulphur now in Berkeley, has overcome educational handicaps to become a leading instructor of the blind and deaf. She will be honored at Gallaudet college in May with an honorary master of arts degree to be awarded by Rep. Mike Monroney. Hall authored papers on deaf and blind education and has demonstrated her methods worldwide.
Bartlesville on March 23 reports Dorothy Thompson will speak as part of a lecture tour across Oklahoma. The event highlights Thompson as a prominent commentator amid ongoing civic discourse.
Wilburton reports that the department will present its experiment findings at the annual field day on April 30 at the range cattle minerals station near here.
New York March 23 The Dun and Bradstreet wholesale food price index stood at 5.79 unchanged from the prior week and 13.8 percent below the 1948 level of 6.72. The index covers wholesale cost of a pound each of 31 commonly used foods. wheat rye oats butter cocoa raisins steers and lambs rose this week while flour corn hams bellies lard sugar cottonseed oil and peas fell.
In Buenos Aires on March 23 President Juan D Peron signed a decree assigning the commerce and industry ministry authority over all raw materials whether produced domestically or imported. The move aims to keep industries running as imports remain halted since February 1 and permits for new imports have not yet been approved.
Anadarko, March 23 Special John Turney of Binger pleaded guilty to whiskey possession charges and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $400. Judge Dewey Hodges imposed the penalty after the case was ready for a jury when the guilty plea was entered. Officers led by state official Jake Sims seized 143 cases of liquor in the February raid with six other officers assisting.
A House labor subcommittee approved the administration labor bill on a party line vote of 8 to 5. The measure repeals Taft-Hartley and reinstates the Wagner Act with changes urged by President Truman. Witnesses split with unions backing the bill or calling for the 1935 act as in 1947, while some favored retaining Taft-Hartley. Committee action follows with a vote by Sen. Thomas and Rep. Lesinski as chairs.
