A second attempt to rob the State Bank of Elgin occurred this morning at 345 Celock as robbers wrecked the outer door with nitro glycerin but fled before blowing the inner heat safe. They took $100 from the front room. nitro glycerin was found on the floor. They escaped on a handcar toward Fort Sill where two men were later arrested as suspects. The earlier attempt was February 28.
The Navy plans to enlist women to replace men in shore clerical work during emergencies. Women would not serve on ships but may handle yard and defense tasks, radio teletype and related communications. Training in camps and prior league programs may factor into selections as shortages of male clerks persist.
Birmingham march 2 six prisoners escaped from the Jefferson county jail after overpowering the warden with revolvers.
