An unidentified elderly man found dead in his city jail cell after a drunkenness arrest was pronounced dead by natural causes. He was booked as John Doe, 55, at 2:35 a.m. and found unconscious at 4:45 a.m. Chief L. J. Hilbert declined comment on the death.
In Harrison County Iowa the Boyer river flood from a breached dike forced about 1,000 residents from a town of roughly 4,000. Four feet of water saturated the business district while homes and porches were submerged. City water was shut off. a 350000 gallon reservoir was rationed. Eight people faced gas exposure during evacuation. mayor Maurice M. Kirlin declared a state of emergency as rescue crews worked through the night.

In New York on March 5 a 38 year-old apprentice on the Army transport E. H. Johnson was stabbed by a crew member who disliked his coffee. The victim Rudolph Smith was in serious condition in a Brooklyn hospital. Police hunted an unidentified merchant seaman who drank the coffee, cursed Smith, and attacked him with a knife.

Joyce Creager 14 suffered small holes in each eye cornea Virginia Smith 14 had severe eye burns and L J Russell 17 had the left cornea burned away. Dr R E Gowan reported their injuries and said they await further eye reports.
WARSAW POLAND MARCH 5 Fritz Adolf Fischer wartime Gestapo chief condemned to death by district court on Saturday for killing thousands of Jews in World War II era crimes.
Marvin D. Cox 31 of Dallas, a truck driver, is held on $4,000 bond for district court trial on charges of attempting to dynamite Froug's department store on February 19. A brief preliminary hearing in Judge Stanley C. Edmister's court led to the commitment. Two Tulsa policemen rushed to prevent a blast after spotting a smoking fuse in dynamite near Froug's. Cox claimed an unknown man gave him the device.
Chicago officer Francis P. Sherrier 25 off duty aided by two policemen rescued Mrs. Lillian Paul 39 who dangled from an eighth floor window at the Wacker hotel. They pinned her coat and wrists and drew her inside after the sash cords had broken. Paul released on 10 dollar bond for disorderly conduct.
Philadelphia march 5 intrafraternity council at the University of Pennsylvania bans paddling and other freshmen hazing including wearing outlandish clothing. President Lee Driscoll says the ruling aims to raise fraternity standards with penalties of fines and possible expulsion from the council.
