British forces struck at Messines region advancing along a seven mile front. They reportedly took all objectives from the Lys to Warnave and occupied the former German trenches astride the mine canal as mines and pressure continued.
About 100 shirkers are in jail to answer charges before United States Commissioner Mason for failure to register. Several unregistered men are held in nearby towns including Frank Matuchick, 29, turned over to jail by local officers for failing to register.
President Wilson signed the three billion war budget bill in Washington on June 18, providing for the new army and other war preparations. It stands as the largest appropriation measure enacted by any government.
