Edmond man A. Hallowell twenty four and war veteran plunged from an eighth floor ledge using a galvanized wire during an escape attempt from the county jail. He sustained multiple fractures and was taken to Mercy Hospital in serious condition. He faced charges of auto theft and kidnapping and was to be arraigned in district court Friday.

Roosevelt James a 45 year old inmate at the Oklahoma State Hospital for the Negro insane in Taft took a loaded pistol and barricaded himself in a large ward. Officers including Sheriff Eddie Briggs used tear gas since 8 a m Friday with no success. James, who had been working as a barber, reportedly refused to surrender and the ward is crisscrossed by windows and a day room. The hospital is located near Muskogee along U S 62 and 64.
