Forecasts show 106 degree highs in southwest Oklahoma with heavy rains in the northeast and widespread showers across the Panhandle. Police chief L. J. Hilbert and Dan Hollingsworth announce a weed cutting drive at city street intersections to reduce traffic hazards. Harold Knorr, 66, creator of Katzenjammer Kids, was found dead in his New York hotel apartment Friday after years of heart illness. Polio claimed its fifteenth victim of the year in Oklahoma as Carol Lou Byrd, five, died at Crippled Children's hospital at 7:57 a m. Daughter of Mr and Mrs Reece L Byrd of Midwest City. Dr Vernon Cushing reported five new patients since Thursday and that 56 cases are acute while 46 are convalescing. Tulsa's Hillcrest hospital welcomed a 6 year old girl from Blanco and a 9 month old boy from Ochelata Washington county.
Salt Lake City reports former Republican representative Frederick Charles Loofbourow died Friday at age 75. An attorney and former judge, he was elected to the U.S. House in 1930, leaving a legacy in public service.
In Roslyn and Cle Elum mines authorities uncovered that Tony Bailey, 19, is actually Gloria Bailey. The deception, adopted to support a sick mother, ended when police observed the impersonator entering a women’s restroom, prompting dismissal due to laws barring women from actual mine work.
In New York Rebecca Sebar a leukemia patient required daily transfusions. Her brother Albert and friend Emanuel Buffa donated blood but funds ran out. They turned to crime to raise money and were arrested while trying to break into a stationery store. Buffa received probation two years. Sebar’s sentence was pending and Rebecca died last Friday.
Congress passed multibillion-dollar long range housing legislation sending it to President Truman amid praise for a major domestic program. The plan funds 810000 public housing units, slum clearance, and farm housing aid with federal rent subsidies up to 308 million annually, while a companion bill expands private home construction with RFC backing.
A third victim died after a crash 20 miles west of El Reno Thursday night. The unidentified hitchhiker died in University hospital Friday morning. Lafayette Dallas Morgan 47 of Bridgeport was killed instantly when a truck struck his car and his wife Edna Iris 45 died one hour later. James Edward Armstrong 21 of Soper Choctaw county died at 8 20 a m Friday after minor injuries. Jim Mills 15 received a broken ankle. Highway patrolman G E Etheridge said Armstrong was driving east on US 66 at the US 281 intersection when the crash occurred.
Tokyo reports that Japan's public safety commission on Friday rejected Prime Minister Yoshida's demand to fire the national rural police chief, leaving the matter unresolved and signaling a political clash over law enforcement leadership.
Horace Thompson reports that a city traffic commission ruled that Willis Stark Otis James and Wayland McCarty are ordinary citizens in traffic matters and not entitled to reserved curbside parking at their businesses. The decision did not apply to loading zones noted in downtown curb markings. Municipal counselor A L Jeffrey criticized the omission.
In Corpus Christi on Thursday six year old James Grumbles picked up a .25 caliber pistol found on the floor and fired at his grandmother Mrs G W Reader. The shot struck her abdomen and right hand. The boy said he believed the weapon was a toy cap pistol. Mrs Reader is reported in good condition.

Hallie Ruth Payne and Velma Sue Biles, teens from Putnam City, completed life saving tests after rescuing a drowning woman at Price's Falls. They performed a dog paddle reach to shore, stabilizing the swimmer who remained unnamed. The girls, 14 and 16, credit their Red Cross instructor and described the rescue as simple and swift.
U S Secretary of the Treasury John W Snyder led talks in London with Prime Minister Attlee and British officials to seek steps to avert Britain’s bankruptcy. The discussions covered currency revaluation, convertibility, trade barriers, and boosting British production backed by Marshall Plan aid and dollar support. Canada joined as creditor and ally in the crisis diplomacy.
A Kansas City couple identified as Minerva Duermeyer and Frank drowned in a Grand Lake boating accident five miles northeast of Grove Oklahoma. The wife was recovered. the husband remained missing as fishermen reported hearing a scream and finding the woman struggling in the water.
President Truman issued an executive order creating an emergency board to investigate a dispute between Missouri Pacific railroad and workers represented by four operating brotherhoods including the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen. The move aims to avert a threatened railroad shutdown.
Three City Bus Co. buses were involved in two accidents within two blocks downtown Friday, injuring three people. A brakes failure on bus driver John Marvin Norse caused a collision with a parked bus operated by George Miller. Two women, Bonnie McCarty and Mrs. E. R. Roberts, were treated for glass injury and broken ribs at Mercy hospital. A replacement bus wheel ran over J. W. Vance as it circled to bypass congestion, injuring his foot and left hand and sending him to Adams clinics.
Miss Dorothy Marie Jorski of Harrah is named historian for the strategic airlift planning committee of the military air transport service in Washington DC. A graduate of Oklahoma College for Women, she has served six months as assistant historian for the combined air lift task force at Wiesbaden.
