Driller gravely hurt as Altus rig collapses near Spencer
An Altus Drilling Co. rig east of Spencer collapsed at about 4 am injuring driller C. R. Dies, 40, of Oklahoma City, who suffered a skull fracture and burns over 65 percent of his body. Three crew members Bill Hanks Tommy Fleming and Tiny Southern escaped after the derrick collapsed trapping them in the doghouse. Sparks from broken wires ignited gas but the men freed Dies and shut off the gas. Dies was the only eyewitness and could not recount the accident.

Oklahoma records first highway death of Fourth holiday weekend
Oklahoma highway patrol reported the first traffic fatality of the long Fourth weekend. Tom Johnson, a 74 year old Watonga resident, died after a truck struck him on Watonga main street Friday night. Clem B Allen, 48, also of Watonga, drove the truck. Johnson died about 30 minutes after arriving at Watonga hospital. June ended with 64 highway deaths, the highest in years, bringing the year’s total to 258, up 38 from last year. Troopers are on 12 hour shifts as patrols flood state roads to curb accidents.

Bandit Shot by Lovers Lane Youth in California Case
