McAlester and Haileyville coal mines are nearly closed as the government cuts coal prices, leaving about 3,000 miners unemployed. Operators plan a Washington delegation to oppose fixed prices while transportation bottlenecks and army needs worsen supply.
Ray E. Stafford secretary of the late Exemption Board for the eastern District of Oklahoma said he could not say if the MW percent of the quota for the district would be ready by September 5. He blamed delays on the focal boards, noting that if they obtain the men, delays may occur on their part in sending names to the adjutant general.
Du Pont Powder company announces it will employ women munition makers at its Carneys Point New Jersey plants. The work will involve cutting smokeless powder and is described as light. The decision aims to stabilize supply as the draft could affect male labor availability.
In St Louis this morning R D White, son of a local manufacturer, was slain after a gunbattle with Patrolman Hert Stanley. White and two accomplices held up a saloon bartender and six patrons. the others escaped.
SHAWNEE Okla Aug 23 Willie OConnell and Lowie Barnard Lincoln county youths were arrested early today at their grandmother’s home between Meeker and Prague by a posse that had trailed them since yesterday. They confessed to killing E Arnold at Chandler and to burglaries and outlawry Barnard was shot during the capture.
The Third city district boosts its test quota by one hundred as 106 more men are notified to report for examinations at University hospital on Fourth street and Stiles avenue. Examinations begin Monday with order numbers 413 to 452 at 9 am and 453 to 512 at 2 pm.
P Quinn of St Louis, missing since September 19 on a Kilbourne Wis fishing trip, arrived in Little Rock after memory loss. Ab Keeling, proprietor of Frises Drug Store at Second and Hadeon, was arrested and arraigned before U S Commissioner Chambers on a Horton narcotics law violation. He pleaded not guilty and released on $2,000 bond. Preliminary hearing set for next Tuesday.
