A statewide dragnet began early this morning to enforce registration and draft rules. About 150 men and others were detained for lacking cards or unclear status, with many released after verification. Three underage youths were found among detainees and ordered to leave town or secure work by Saturday.

Bulletin from Washington reports a Bolshevik regime crisis in Petrograd with the US consulate closed and Americans warned to depart. It notes regulars arriving from Manila and a new wartime ice and food regulation to be enforced Saturday, detailing distribution limits and restrictions on shops and basements to conserve supplies.
Congress shifts to the manpower bill extending the army draft age from 18 to 48 years. House passage was ordered before adjournment as the Senate prepared to act on the measure seen as vital to mobilization during the wartime period.
Rev Samuel Judson Porter has been offered the pastorate of the First Baptist Church but has not yet decided. He will remain in Cresthomo City over today and conduct both morning and evening services. The church had sought a pastor for about two months since Rev Herman Ho Hulten resigned due to illness.

A British wartime dispatch from London via Montreal notes merchant ship losses by German U-boats rose in July to 167 479 tons, an uptick of 10 965 tons from June. Allied and neutral tonnage also increased by 20 582 tons versus June.
Associated Press reports French General Mangin’s army drives along the Divelle and Oise rivers, reaching near Neyon while Haig’s British strike along the Ancre and Arras lines. German retreat appears limited, with Noyon sector under pressure and northwest routes remaining as potential escapes.
