Seven month old Robin Leigh Whitford demonstrates veteran swimming at the Ambassador hotel pool. She began lessons at 4 days old, paddling in a bathinette, and now swims 30 feet with a junior Australian crawl. Her mother notes she cannot yet crawl on a floor.
General Hoyt S. Vandenberg told the House committee that Russia is America s only plausible enemy and atomic bombing has first priority in wartime. He defended the B 36 and denied allegations of improper procurement while asserting the integrity of Air Force leadership amid an official inquiry into war planning and potential political pressure from Floyd Odlum. The Senate judiciary committee approved Tom C. Clark 9 to 2 to be associate justice of the Supreme Court and backed J. Howard McGrath 9 to 0 for attorney general. The state board of education unanimously supported adding the Granite city school system to include a new reformatory school at the state Granite prison. Bill Shipley, new education director, and Granite city school superintendent Clarence Berry urged approval. Shipley said the prison school would begin with about 300 inmates and be run by Granite city schools with teachers hired and instruction accredited.
The government reports that at the start of 1949 American consumers had a record 132 billion dollars in purchasing power, a 2 billion rise from late 1947 and 87 billion more than at the war’s start. The funds can bolster demand for goods, services, business investment, housing, and nest eggs for potential need.
738 taxpayers signed a petition filed by Robert Cunningham asking a county grand jury to probe the county tax title business and O J Fox finances. Atlanta Aug 12 UPI reports author Margaret Mitchell was fatally injured in a street collision. A brain specialist, Dr George F Dowman, was summoned as she lay in a semicomatose state at Grady Memorial hospital after an off duty cab driver struck her and her husband on Peach Tree Street. Despite two transfusions she remained in extremely critical condition.
Three Allegheny county judges signed a court order directing male visitors and attendants to remove coats due to an 80 degree courtroom. The judges Henry X. O'Brien Thomas M. Marshall and Harry M. Montgomery wore no robes under the heat.

Police said two Black men confessed to the $4 robbery and the shooting, but names and statements were withheld pending further testimony.
