Scanland pursues Ted Smith alias a major county tax title dealer with 61 deeds won since 1944. Records show hundreds of tax certificates held, many redeemed. most properties bought for small sums. Hale assures property owners not to worry if taxes are current or mortgaged with reliable firms.
DETROIT August 9. Some 10 000 Packard Motor Car Co workers walked off the job in a dispute over the discharge of a foundry worker Jesse Green. Local 190 CIO United Auto Workers held a mass meeting to plan further action. The union says Green did not strike his foreman. Packard says the walkout violated the contract.
The U S Weather Bureau reports a mostly cloudy windy day with occasional showers and thunderstorms today tonight and Wednesday. Temperatures remain steady with highs near 86 today and in the 80s Wednesday. Lows around 76 tonight with panhandle near 63 and statewide highs 85 to 90 with scattered showers likely afternoons and nights.
Sen. Vandenberg proposed cutting the first year cost of western European arms aid by half, suggesting Congress fund about 58 million in cash with the rest in future contract authorizations. He argued the 1.16 billion earmarked for NATO nations could absorb the adjustment without changing total program size. Secretary Johnson rejected the plan, saying the full 1.45 billion is needed to secure U S defense, and urged funds and authorization to proceed.
In New York on August 9 a smoke filled independent system train caused shouting and panic as passengers crowded from the cars. Six people were hospitalized for shock while thousands gathered near 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue. Police attributed the danger to a loose metal plate causing short circuits under each car. no fire occurred.
Franklin Mass August 9 A navy chief petty officer John F Webber 35 of Tulsa was held for a grand jury in $5 000 bail after arraignment on polygamy charges. His first wife Pauline 40 a Worcester restaurant hostess claimed Webber married Jessie 39 of Franklin in Quincy on July 28 1949. Webber pleaded innocent noting counsel argued the first marriage may be invalid pending a final divorce.
Milton W. Harrison sixty, board chairman of the Midland Continental Railroad of Jamestown North Dakota, died Monday night in Bronxville New York.
The Oklahoma City Real Estate board and the Oklahoma Apartment Owners Association filed a formal petition for rent decontrol with the mayor and city council. It requests a hearing after 10 days’ notice and a resolution to declare rental housing shortage ended, plus sending to Gov. Turner for federal expeditor action. Resolutions were adopted earlier by both groups. council quorum delay postponed consideration.
A group of displaced persons attacked communist candidate Egon Herrmann just before he began speaking at a rally in Dachau city hall. Herrmann, former leader of the Dachau refugee camp, was beaten as the crowd stormed the venue.

Washington report shows the house ways and means committee backing a rise in social security payroll tax from 1.8 billion to 2.7 billion next year and to about 3.6 billion in 1951 with further hikes planned for 1960 1965 and 1970 raising the rate to 3 percent for both employer and employee. The committee also votes a roughly 70 percent boost to old age and survivors benefits as a cost of living increase. The plan aims to add 11 million workers to the 35 million covered but faces doubtful action this year in Congress.
Housing expeditor Tighe Woods testified that Maj. Gen. Harry Vaughan pressed for favorable handling of the Tanforan California race track construction matter in 1948. Vaughan, Truman’s aide, suggested personal interest by friends and urged Woods to decide on merits and legality. Witnesses noted court injunctions and later clearance by the justice department.
Two young men from Oklahoma City, wounded in St. Louis after a failed tavern shootout, admitted four tavern robberies in Oklahoma City. Police say the pair, ages 21 and 22, will be tried in Missouri. They face charges for robberies at Bramwood tap room, Mae West tavern, West Side drive inn, and Red Skin taproom, netting $450. They are also wanted by Camp Campbell authorities for allegedly fleeing with twelve .45 pistols.
The junior class of nurses at University Hospital will receive black velvet stripes for their caps signifying the start of their final year. The ceremony, in the nurses' home auditorium, is supervised by 12 senior nurses who recently received nursing certificates at the University of Oklahoma graduation in Norman. They will become registered nurses after passing the state exam.

Washington Aug 9 Robert A Lovett former assistant secretary of war for air told the house armed services committee no outside influence was exerted to get the B 36 bomber on its way in 1941 Lovett said the B 36 was born in August 1941 after air corps planners determined a bomber with 10000 pound load capable of 10000 miles was needed He said a contract for designing the plane went to Consolidated Vultee after bids from three firms and denied any evidence of influence from bankers industrialists Floyd Od lum or others Od lum head of Atlas Corp now controlling Consolidated and Emmanuel head of Aviation Corp which once controlled Consolidated were to testify later
